I don't get the people that see Vic as a technical gag. I've been a fan for a long time and it seems that his musical imagination and execution is in a state of constant growth and evolution. I manage to always be surprised. Technical, yes... but also incredibly soulful, groovy and expressive. If you ask me, he's a paradigm of what it means to be a musician.

Yeah, I agree. Bass is as versatile as a electric guitar but is very underrated because many times it's just there in the background. Listening to bands and/or artists that aren't afraid to use their bassist to play something creative like tapping or solo parts like Victor right here makes me a happy bassist. I personally chose bass over electric guitar because it's such an underestimated yet beautiful instrument.

Lets not forget while Wooten a superior musician in many ways to the deceased, murdered Jaco Pastorius, it was Pastorious who really did much to make the electric bass a solo instrument and created some techiques that Wooten and other great young bassist use today. it was terrible the way Pastorius was beat to death in the late 1980's. god rest his soul.
@garymorrison4139
8 жыл бұрын
+Anon Frank I do not remember Jaco Pastorias being inferior to Victor Wooten. In fact what Wooten represents to my way of thinking is the triumph of technique over musicianship. What has taken place since Patorious' death is a popular confusion about what the role of a bass player in an ensemble is. Jazz Rock fusion lost its way and finally went nowhere because it tended to adopt the formula of competing soloists. This formula emphasized technical virtuosity at the expense of musical taste song writing and arrangement. I think Victor for all his skill is a flash in the pan soloist. One of my favorite examples of what a show boat he is remains the video of him covering Michael Jacksons; I Want You Back". Wooten is likely to end up where heavy metal guitarists from the 8o's are today..

+gary morrison To be fair to the other guy, he said "superior musician in many ways" not superior musician, or even superior musician in most ways. Also, I think your analysis of Wooten is wrong. While I don't think he sounds particularly good here, his performances of Amazing Grace and the stuff he did for EMG TV is always stuff I would listen to on my downtime. Not for the technique, but because it sounds so damn good.
@MattFoleysGhost

+gary morrison Thank you. Wooten dazzles, but Jaco breaks your heart (and puts it back together again) - and that's an overlooked difference. I've never heard electric bass played as beautifully as Jaco did.

Great comment Danny and I must agree. We live in an era where technique is conflated with artistry and in fact these remain distinct judgements. Technical proficiency is not artistry. Wooten is an overrated showboat in my opinion. Wooten's playing falls into the category of empty virtuosity. I read a comment attributed to the bassist Leland Sklar, "When I get called to a recording session, I try to keep in mind that I am not there to demonstrate how well I play my instrument but to focus my attention on playing someone else's music."

I remember Wooten's brother with that make shit percussion instrument he wore like a guitar. I can't figure out why he never switched to guitar ? you should hear him on 6 string electric bass too.

this is a clinic on how to play. hammer-ons, pull-offs, and right hand tapping. i was wondering how ALL of those sounds are being made and I noticed he's not 'plucking' the usual way, but tapping the frets with his right hand to get all those tones. eye-opening, non-conforming and a lot to learn just by watching him not play the 'norm', proof that there is no right or wrong way if you know your instrument.
