I am American living in the Andalusian Mountains of Spain. I was born and raised in NYC. This video makes me happy I live here because Spain has had a campaign for a decade against violence toward women. In 10 years here I never once had any sexist attitudes toward me. In France where I also lived for 10 years I had many nasty incidents. I also met my highly abusive French boyfriend. I live in a village of 1,200 in Spain and feel completely at home with no other Americans around. Some English ladies wanted me to be in their coffee club but I have more fun in my Spanish circles. More spontaneous, less pretentious, warmer and kinder. I do many activities from hiking to cooking classes. I am never going back to the USA.

What a great interview! Thank you for hosting Victoria on your channel. I have so much respect for women like her who can keep walking forward in the reality of their circumstances and recognize and accept the pros and cons of it all. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, but the trick is not let it harden us and she has certainly retained her lightness of spirit through some tough times. No easy feat. Brava Victoria!

My parents left Serbia (fmr Yugoslavia) in 71 to come to Canada for a better life. I’m Canadian born. I live in a culture where women are treated a bit better but still have many men that have a patriarchal mindset. But theres no way I could move to Serbia and see the way women are treated. Yes there are some good men and I have a few uncles that prove that. But I’m 48 now with some trauma from past abuses that I don’t think I could ever remarry. I wanted to move to Italy as the scenery and lifestyle seems relaxed. But now I’m not so sure after listening to Victoria. It’s that fork in the road decision.

So Victoria left her high paying job in her early thirties. Moved to Italy for over 20 years. I have so many questions. Like did she even learn the language? Not working for all those years so no pension when she retires. She seems trapped by her lifestyle choice.

In Italy violence against women is a serious problem, this is indisputable. But it is not true that Italy has the worst situation in Europe. "Sexual violence in Italy is growing. In 2013, looking at the data collected by the Ministry of the Interior and therefore relating only to the reported incidents, there were 4,448. In 2022 it reached 6,291. But what happens in other countries? Based on the figures collected up to 2021 by Eurostat, Italy is not among the top countries for the number of sexual violence. The state where the incidence, per 100 thousand inhabitants, is highest is Sweden, which exceeds 200 cases. Behind them are Iceland, above 150, and France, over 100 (Paris exceeds the Italian average by 10 times). Then again Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium. It must be said, however, that the comparison between countries in these cases is particularly complex. In fact, it must be considered that the behaviors that constitute crimes of sexual violence vary from one legal system to another. Then there is the question of complaints. There are places, like in Eastern Europe, where reporting is very complex and others, like Scandinavia, where it is simpler."

It was a good interview unfortunately Victoria chose the wrong person to live her life with, it would’ve been interesting to know if the abuse started at the beginning of her marriage or towards the middle or towards the end. She never did say if she became fluent into the Italian language. Let’s face it prostitution is in every country, depending the extent of it. Let’s face it if she had married a different type of Italian man her responses and attitude-would have been different. The experiences can alter your attitudes and sometimes not objectively. I do enjoy your videos.
@realexpatslivinginitaly

Thanks. Yes of course, with a different man she could have been happier, and yes prostitution is in every country, it just sometimes seems so 'in your face' here in Italy (I refer to the daytime in unexpected areas, often where children are traveling home from school for example) . I hope Victoria finds her true soul mate some day. Thank you for watching

I am liking this woman when she speaks a lot (as of now) but statistically speaking, Italy has the lowest rates of feminicides in Europe. It is still a massive massive issue do not get me wrong. A big issue that has been on the news a lot and for the aimed reasons. Please do look at statistics though.

Also when it comes to naked women: it is not a Catholic country but a laic one. Even though the body of a woman should not objectified, it is fine if one wants to expose it - if the woman itself wants to and is not conditioned or forced to do so. :'( Italy has plenty of contradiction but I do get the point of view. Still, I am a firm believer in being able to show bodies. I mean, they are in statues, paintings - why not on the TV? There is some sort of regression also abroad
@realexpatslivinginitaly
9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for commenting. I don't think she accuses Italy of being any worse than other countries, she is just telling her own story, (which I appreciate immensely as it can't be easy) . Sweden seems to have more femminicides in Europe apparently (from another comment). Roll on the day when we have less and less violence on women and oppression (of all types) throughout the world. Regarding objectifying/exposing bodies, I think the main issue is the time of day. Maybe it is not such a good idea to let children grow up being exposed at all times of the day, or on the streets they pass going to school (honestly, some prostitutes on the roads are practically naked). Art does not so much objectify as venerate the beauty of the human body. I agree, it is beautiful but, context is important too don't you think?

this is the fear i have. i am set to retire early to italy in about 5 years. my children will be grade 3 and grade 6. I can't imagine them in a public school especially as asians. I often wonder what to do? do i fork over 50K to send them to an international school with an IB curriculum so that they have a chance at a top US university (like I went to?). Or do I simply have them start all over in a language they don't know in Italy and potentially be behind.
