Victoria Wood was so gracious in giving all the best lines to her comedy partner! Love the Kitty dialogues as well!

This is the funniest sketch I've seen for ages, and love the non-pc jokes. I must remember that Cardiff Arms Park one ;) "What's that at the end dear? Profiteroles? Oh no, it's your dishcloth." ;) You'll certainly trigger some people today with the stomach pump joke. What fun to tell them that it was a Victoria Wood joke from 40 years ago.

Spot on ted, I've developed a sort of Victoria Wood tourettes whereby I say some of these lines at random (to myself) to help me get through the day.

Glad to see some Wood and Walters sketches have been posted now Network dvd have eventually released the whole series. I thought they were never going to see the light of day. This is one of my favourites, alongside the dentist and hair dresser sketches.

Victoria had such faith in Julie that she wrote "Waitress" for her. She told the series director "It looks nothing on paoer, but just wait until you see Julie do it." "Waitress" is usually referred to as "Two Soups."

Wow,seems I'm playing catch up,lol.The times I've nipped into M&S Coffee Shop & made a cup of green tea & a slice of carrot cake last over an hour just listening to women of a certain age talking just like in this sketch.Yesterday,for example,2 elderly biddies a couple of tables away were bemoaning the drop in standards pertaining to customers,or 'riff-raff' as they indelicately phrased it! "See that 1 over there? What is she,18? And how many kids has she,3? "Tsk,tsk,absolutely disgusting" PMSL.

What does the phrase mean: "...pouring mets over a bucket of privett..."? That rhyming slang for something, or local relevance to some brand of something or other?
@DistantCousin
9 жыл бұрын
plutorama "you get a better drink pouring meths over a a bucket of privet". Well, Meths is a slang word for methalated spirits - a notorious cheap substitute for alcohol (using associated with homeless people back in the day). Privet I assume she means privet hedge, as in the kind of bush you get in a garden. If it is that, the joke doesn't really work! You wouldn't get a privet hedge into a bucket. Hmm!!
@rbeygarcia

DistantCousin Ah. Well privvet might be an allusion to shite. Since privvy means shithouse, privett might mean shit. I mean unless privet was a brand of something known to the locals

plutorama Pouring meths over a bucket of privet. Meths, methylated spirit. Privet, hedge.

Apparently, after reading up, Privet the plant used for hedging is used by some as a "bitter" in drinks. It has medicinal uses in cancer patients to make them develop hunger and eat. My guess is the allusion in the joke was to this specific characteristic of the hedging plant.
@Fatima502

Meths means methylated spirit, which is denatured alcohol. Not bucket, she says "a packet of privet” which I understood to me the little leaves you get from privet bushes. Which are bitter, but can be used for medicinal purposes. All in all a very rudimentary (and possibly lethal) beverage. The Julie Walters character was exaggerating for effect, as she was throughout the sketch.

"!Well, she wasn't handing over 38p for a couple of Kunzles!" It's a funny word which boggles the mind - but actually Kunzles were cakes popular in the 1960s and 70s... but the observational nature of Victoria Wood's comedy adds to the cleverness of it... and you have to have a bit of knowledge to fully appreciate it. Or do some research - which is well worth it. Brilliant.
