I agree. When I was in the army I was a Chinook mechanic, and I carried the Victorinox Mechanic for two years until I got my first Leatherman. The SAK never failed me. The main reason I upgraded (and it is an upgrade) to the Leatherman was simply because it was much easier to open one handed but didn't pinch like the Gerber. I still have my SAK Mechanic to this day, 30 years later

If you need the pliers, but they're not the main thing, then a Victorinox with excellent everything else and great pliers for their size beats the Leatherman with amazing pliers and mediocre everything else

I love these pliers! The Handyman was my first authentic Swiss army knife and still my favorite model Victorinox makes. Bought it for myself after months of research, watching channels very much like your own. I was so close to buying the plierless Ranger instead, and I love the Ranger now that I have one but I definitely made the right call for my first pick. It was with the Handyman that I finally gave daily-carrying pliers a try, and I'm a changed man for it. The quality of the pliers didn't surprise me because I did my research. Quite strong for their size, very well machined, super pinchy at the tip and nice sharp teeth in the jaws. I knew to expect slightly lackluster wire cutters; one should only expect so much. Mini pliers like these aren't fit for a construction yard but they're perfect for solving small little daily problems like pinching stuck receipts out of gas pumps, grabbing hold of hot things or protecting your numb fingers from the cold, picking up that slippery little piece that you dropped into a deep corner of a computer case or whatever, all sorts of stuff. There's so many uncomfortable or impossible things to accomplish with fingers that these can easily accomplish. Carrying pliers with me everywhere made me keenly aware of the weakness of my own flesh. There's no going back now. Thankfully we have Swiss army knives and Leathermans and such, otherwise I might have to commit to the whole cyborg thing because a guy carrying around a full-size set of pliers at the grocery store might be scarier than a cyborg. When I do carry my Ranger it's paired with either the new-ish (2020) Knipex Cobra XS water pump pliers or a Leatherman Skeletool RX. Going without pliers feels like leaving behind my thumbs at this point.

YES! YES! YES! Totally with you on this! I had a little discussion with someone in some yt comments section, they were insisting that the Leatherman Squirt PS4 pliers are better as they are ''beefier''. Well I have a PS4 Squirt - which is pretty much unemployed since the scissors spring broke - and a Vic Swisschamp, and the pliers heads are of the same thickness on both. But because there is no pivot between the handles and head on the Vic pliers - the handle/head part is contiguous if that's the right word. As you clearly show, they are basically a small pair of dedicated pliers attached to a SAK. Of course they are far stronger than those on the Leatherman! Any folding multitool pliers is only ever as strong as the weakest point, that being the pivot where the handles are connected to the head. Also the SAK pliers are much more practical in use because with a Squirt or similarly sized keychain multitool, you're holding the handles with 2 or 3 fingers max on one side, and the thumb on the other, not a good grip, and limited leverage. Whereas when I deploy my SAK pliers I'm gripping the body of the knife too, pretty much with my whole hand. Plus I have more reach. Only the wire cutting capability is somewhat better on the Squirt (but not on the Dime). Also the Vic pliers are better shaped and profiled for small nuts and bolts. I've had similar discussions with Leatherman fanboys dissing the Knipex Cobra XS. I'm not hating on LM as I do like my Bond and Rebar (but not my deceased Squirt). But again the same applies, the Cobra is made from two forgings with no weak point between the handles and head. I've seen a vid of a man standing on the upper handle of one, with the jaws locked onto a bolt protruding from a wall. If you stand on the upper handle of any Leatherman - it would have to be on the ground though - there will be a snap and that's the end of your LM. I've sometimes thought about buying another Cobra XS, and a Leatherman Surge, and literally tearing the Surge apart with the 2 Cobras, and uploading a vid showing this. Okay, rant over. Cheers from UK.

Tim Leatherman used to demo the medium-sized tools like the Wave by standing on them to cut through 16-penny duplex nails made for concrete. Of course that's a Wave and not a keychain tool like a Squirt. I agree that this plier design is far more durable than the Squirt. My observation is that Leatherman tools most often break just between the wire cutters and the central plier pivot, extremely rarely at the handle pivots. The Squirt is known to have kinda fragile backsprings, yet I see the pliers themselves fail more often than the handle pivots. There are certain models which can sometimes break at the handle pivots, and this includes the Wave. But it isn't just because of the pivot, if that were so we'd see similar failures on more traditional models like the Rebar and Supertool but we basically never do. The Wave and models like it have frame-locking outer tools; a section of the handle frame right where those plier handle pivots are is cut and bent outwards to act as a locking surface. This cut leaves a weakness that wouldn't otherwise be present in the folding handle; the solid steel which wraps over the plier pivots have basically been skeletonized. Yet even with that Skeletonization I very rarely hear of failures at these points. The Victorinox pliers don't break for I think two reasons. 1: Victorinox pliers appear to be made from a very slightly softer steel, less inclined to fracture. If you cut a few steel paperclips with these you may notice the pliers sticking, because the wire cutter has rolled and is rubbing against itself. 2: While the central plier pivots are basically the exact same size and thickness, the jaws of the Squirt are longer, both handles are longer and both handles go inside your palm. More leverage from the added length, and more force you can apply by having a better grip with both handles in your palm. And in fact, the Victorinox has just slightly more metal on the central pivot, sticks up and off to the side exactly where the wire cutters are. This spot is exactly where I most often see failures on misused Leathermans. My favorite Leatherman to carry, the supposedly ultra heavy-duty Surge, does in fact have a crack right at that weak point on one of the handles which comes from the frame-lock cutout. It happened when I opened the pliers one day, heard an odd click and noticed one handle was slightly looser than usual. Still works but I've been meaning to send it in under warranty. I suspect this was a heat treating issue, because I've seen people abuse the hell out of the Surge and I never did. That cutout is absolutely a weak point but it's not THAT weak. Still, for a true heavy-duty Leatherman I'd go with the Supertool which lacks this vulnerability.

Just yesterday the pliers really came in handy putting together a full keyboard. Strong enough and precise. Sure it's not a full-on hard-work set of pliers or even like most Leatherman, but that's not what a Victorinox is supposed to be.

People forget that these are light duty stuff and some assume it could replace their heavy duty tools. That said they're pretty strong: Ive used them on the car a lot in a pinch where I was on the road. Pliers strong enough to unscrew some nuts (obviously not the large ones, but reality is most bolts you may tackle are 10-13mm, which this works fine) wire cutting, etc It really is a nifty tool.

Browsing EDC type forums and videos, it’s easy to get the feeling a lot of people have a no idea what “right tool for the job” means. To some, I CAN use this tool wrongly becomes I SHOULD use this tool

Absolutely. You'll see it a ton on leatherman and other pliers based multitool forums and subreddits. "Muh pliers broked I was only prying framing nails outta my house/trying to loosen a torqued bolt on my car" Like if you were gonna do that job, go get a tool for it, would needlenose pliers be the tool you choose? No? Then if you're not gonna use proper forged pliers, then cast pliers aren't even gonna have a chance of course your tool broke.

Yup, I actually use them for small electronics tasks (soldering pcb), taking off cables, tinkering around etc. Idk why people throw tasks at these pliers that are unreasonable for its size. Everything has its place or role. If they want a Leatherman just buy one…and spend a lot more while they’re at it.

Every time I hear a reviewer complaining about a certain tool on a Victorinox multi-tool I want to tell them they lack ingenuity, imagination, and the tool was not designed for them. Sadly they lack the all important “MacGyver” gene.

Don't forget the warranty a cheque for postage and they will fix it like new a friend gave me one with a broken blade he used for prying 2 weeks got it back like new

OMG I love your scales! They look absolutely sick!🔥 Definitely would not go without pliers on my EDC. Rocking deluxe tinker. It has a perfect set of tools for my needs. Philips instead of cork screw is a big one too! Whatever people say that it is useless - it is pretty much my most used tool since the little one on the can opener cant handle much and doesn't have good reach.

If you can only have a SAK, the pliers are nice to have, yes. For me - I have a Knipex and a SOG PowerPint, both of which are substantially more pocketable, as the smallest non-custom SAK with pliers is at least 4 layers. And I have a Wave in my backpack with me, always. Sadly, my SAKs mostly live at home now, with the exception of Classic SD, which is always in my pocket to provide scissors and tweezers regardless of what else I carry. ...but I always welcome a good excuse to acquire more tools, yes! ;)

They are really nice small pliers that are not shaped like a lineman's tool. . They fit elegantly in the knife. They are not big pliers. II they were big pliers, they would not meet the fit and finish standards SAK users prefer. Someday I will likely buy one of the older, discontinued smaller SAKS with pliers. But like I do now, I will just carry a plain old pair of pliers in each of my backpacks.

Living in a house with wooden floors and 2 kids, the Victorinox tweezers aren't my go to when it comes to a splinter. The Vic pliers are the best. They even manage better on their own with the pliers than with tweezers, and the other branded plier multitools are useless. There isn't precision in those pliers to pull a small splinter out.

The pliers are great, but they do have their downsides - one of which being width and weight. Most SAKs with pliers are rather fat and heavy. I don't have exact weights, but I think they weigh 40 grams on their own, more than any other tool. If you don't already own a SAK with pliers, you are probably better off getting a pair of Knipex Cobra XS pliers to carry along with your SAK. They are more capable pliers and you have the additional advantage of using pliers and SAK in combination - e.g. holding something and and then doing something with or to it using the SAK.

I don't think they're useless, but they do suck as pliers go. If you need pliers, they may work. If you need real pliers, they're terrible. That's the reason my SAK sits in my glove box instead of in my pocket.
