Hello Everyone! Thank you for tuning in. There's no narration or speech in this video.
A couple of days ago everyone in Russia was busy celebrating the 74th anniversary of end of WWII. This date evokes a multitude of feelings and emotions - gratitude and sorrow, celebration and remembrance.
I have yet to meet a single Russian citizen that didn't lose a relative in the war. The wounds are still all too fresh: For many of us, it was our grandparents that fought for survival, that fought to defend their country, their loved ones. More than 20 million lives were lost. Thankfully, a handful of veterans are still alive, and it's important that we celebrate their victory, while embracing the memory of those that have left us.
It's hard to call Victory Day a holiday or strictly a celebratory occasion - for each and every one of us this day has a different and personal meaning. But for the most part it is a day of gratitude. Appreciation for the sacrifices made seventy years ago which ensured our survival as a nation, which guaranteed the freedoms we enjoy today. It's not something we can ever forget.
This is the second year in a row now that my family and I have taken part in the "Immortal Regiment" in Moscow. After the Military parade and a series of memorial services, people gather on the Tverskaya street in Moscow holding portraits of their Veteran relatives, and march together a few kilometers in an effort to show respect and appreciation. Last year over a million people marched through the Red Square in the 5 hours that the "Regiment" lasted! This year, because of the hail and thunderstorms over Moscow there were fewer of us - 700,000. But the atmosphere was still the same - happiness, sorrow, patriotism, it was all intertwined as we marched down the street, singing songs like Katyusha (Катюша) and Den Pobedy (День Победы) - crying, playing music and yelling "Hooray!".
Later in the evening the Moscow sky was lit up for ten uninterrupted minutes with fireworks in 34 locations. For those looking skyward in the city center, they were completely surrounded by the entrancing lights and explosions, by the sound of artillery fire.
I hope I managed to convey the atmosphere of this day at least to a certain extent. If you're thinking of coming to Moscow someday, catching the celebrations on May 9th would be an unforgettable experience!
Thank you very much for watching! If you enjoyed the video, it would be great if you'd subscribe for more! Also, I'd love to hear your ideas on what you'd like to see me film in Russia, or otherwise!
Filmed in 4K UHD on Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera, and on the Huawei Mate 20x when it was raining :)
