The Shroud of Turin is a length of linen cloth that is thought by many to hold an image of Jesus Christ, miraculously imprinted into it and believed to be the cloth He was buried in. The first person to notice the image and photograph it in 1898, was amateur photographer and Italian, Secondo Pia.
The first mention of the shroud goes back to 1354, when it was seen as a relic, but denounced as a fake 35 years later. It was damaged in France, by fire in 1532, then, in 1578 it was moved to Turin Cathedral, Italy, where it has been ever since and viewed by millions. Since 1983, it has been owned by the Catholic Church.
The shroud was radiocarbon dated in 1988, and was said to date from between 1260 and 1390, though some say that these dates were due to tests being done on newer, triangular patches of cloth, used to repair the much older shroud, after being burnt in France in 1532.
What looks like blood stains on the cloth match with wounds on the crucified Christ, mentioned in the Bible… though some deny this.
Some doubt the shroud, due to it being one piece wrapped around the body of Jesus, saying that the Bible mentions that the body and head were wrapped with separate clothes! What do we make of that? And, in 1978, a leading expert and chemical microscopist claimed that the so-called bloody image on the shroud was nothing more than painted on red ochre.
At the same time, some other experts disagreed, saying that painted on red ochre could not be an explanation for the image on the shroud.
In 2015, DNA from the 1977 and 1988 tests of the shroud was examined, and, although a connection to the Middle East was made, connections to other places father away were made too, said to be likely due to contamination from people from those distant lands viewing and touching the shroud.
Some are saying that the proportions of the body in the image on the shroud are wrong… that arms and face are out of proportion… but, have they stopped to think, that Jesus was tortured horribly, with his arms probably pulled out of their sockets and his faced pummelled out of proportion? Some people don’t recognise their own spouses after they have been attacked and beaten up!
Some say that the shroud was created by some form of radiation emission at the "moment of resurrection", though some scientists say that that goes against the laws of physics…but, the miraculous things Jesus did, as mentioned in the Bible, definitely go against the laws of physics!
Why would someone, so long ago, go to such lengths to create a shroud of such intricate detail, that is even baffling the greatest scientists of today, as to whether it is fake or not?
Is it the shroud of Jesus? I believe it is, but if proven to be a fake, engineered by some brilliant lost artistic technique, it would NOT decrease my belief in Christ, one jot. Christianity is faith-based. "For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:20-21).
