I believe the workflow you choose must be suited to your particular workstation. I'm currently using Cineform, and the primary reason behind it, is that it's GPU accelerated. I tried DNx, but with multiple streams it would bog down my CPU, and MOV container is limited to 4GB RAM usage, so MXF is a must. I'm running a Ryzen 7 1700x and 16GB RAM, so with Cineform i can put most of the load on my GTX 1060 freeing up resources to other resource consuming tasks like stabilizing. Since it supports 4K 10bit it's more than enough for my needs, when transcoding or creating a master render for an EDL when going from PPro to Resolve. Having a workflow where you have fast enough disks and you aren't reading and writing of a same disk at the same time is just as important as what codec you choose. Great video, lots of info and very well explained.
@facundocordara3258
5 жыл бұрын
With a master render and an EDL you can practically do whatever you want. With a XML things get tricky, since every NLE interprets them differently, and Resolve can be cumbersome in that regard

Super Duper video as always! There aren't many people out there diving in and explaining all those technical details and none of them do it as well as you do! A great follow up on this video would be to talk about the encoding part of the Codec and the misconception about data rate vs image quality. Higher Mbits/s does not necessarily mean higher image quality. Camera manufacturers always communicate on data rate which is a bit misleading and no one talks about image quality. It all depends on the internal implementation of the video encoder that is in the camera. I used to work for a semiconductor company doing h.264 and HEVC video encoder ASICs and I can tell you that companies often cut corners on supported encoding features as the hardware complexity to support those feature is exponential (for some of them) and trade-offs have to be made. Hence, you can have 2 different encoders with the same output data rate (XX Mbits/s) but different image quality, only because one encoder works harder than the other when compressing/encoding the original data. BTW, this is not true for decoders: they must support all features of the video standard (h.264/HEVC/etc) to be certified.

I'm so glad this popped up on my recommendations because I was planning on making my post-production more manageable in premiere by using prores video previews + proxies. I was using H.264 throughout my whole workflow and I'm suffering tremendously because of how much it taxes my computer when I edit and export. Doing multiple projects with multiple deliveries with 2~4 re-edits each is an absolute nightmare. RED: .R3D RED Code RAW & proxies at the same time, for variable bit rate & compression, 6:1 usually. Arri: ProRes4444 (or other ProRes). BlackMagic: I have not yet tested Black Magic RAW, but look forward to testing it; hope it performs like .R3D. Kinefinity: No idea. Everything else: Recorder + ProResHQ if possible, otherwise as high a data rate as the camera will record and 4:2:2 10bit if available. (This high capture workflow did come back to haunt me this year, as the "editor"/director could not handle the large files, did not know how to use proxies, and spent as little time as possible on the edit. :( It's trickier shooting in h.264, 4:2:0 8bit, lighting, color charts, white balance, etc need more time to be perfect; once mastered, then you jump to an expensive camera and don't have to worry so much :/ Using a h.264, 4:2:0 8bit camera definitely stresses me out more than a pro camera, especially on limited budget shoots where there's only 4 hours at a location, to set up & shoot. I've handed off footage to clients/producers/etc before, who did not understand the wrapper file system, and they only copied the .MTS files, with no metadata, or screwed up the file folder structure, complicating the edit. DITs are very important. The Panasonic S1 is going to have groundbreaking recording capture....

That's just too much data for me. I've started saving for the Ninja V. I could use that for any future cameras. If I went ProRes HQ or Avid HQx, I think I'd rather go RAW 3:1 or 4:1 instead.

@@geraldundone Watching this, video while taking notes, took a lot longer than originally anticipated. However, it was totally worth it! I'm now looking closer at my camera specs and video editor. Some time ago, I watched a video on proxies, and got the basic concept. However, your in-depth presentation really tied this whole thing together; acquisition, delivery, and intermediary. I liked the dive into the alternatives to H.264; IPB vs ALL-I. I recently discovered that ALL-I was the way to go, due to better post-production editing performance...but I didn't understand why. I really enjoyed the cost per GB comparison of SD cards against external storage. That's looking at the big picture! I'm looking forward to revisiting this video, and notes, again...after I've had some time to digest it. I'm certain that I'll learn something else on the 2nd go at it. My Journey: 6 months ago, I left my day job to pursue running an online business, monetizing something that I love. During this pursuit I've learned how to: 1) Establish legal/tax sheltering (LLC). 2) Build a website/store (WordPress). 3) Edit video (Adobe Premiere). 4) Basic camera settings configuration (Canon 7D). 5) Etc. I still have a long way to go. The two(2) most important things I've learned: 1) Had I known, in the beginning, how little I actually knew, I never would have started this adventure. haha Being naive has its perks. 2) There's no way that I could do any of this without people like you. Thank you a lot for the video. I personally think that most of the data management issues and read write speed actually stem from the need to record in 4K. I do understand the reasoning for it as 4K seems to offer better quality in consumer cameras such as the Sony a seven series however when you default to 2K recording A lot of those issues go away. This is the main reason why I got the Canon C300 Mark II (used it is in the range of c200). Just like the Arri Alexa it has various codecs and allows you to shoot straight into a beautiful intermediate codec. I see very small differences between the 2K and 4K and can almost never justify the data management overhead.

yeah this video stuffed with a lot of info, I would also like to hear more about other codecs and containers like the mkv, avi, wmv, flv, swf, m2ts..... etc.

Well done bro. Thank you. I'm still struggling with codecs to this day. I have to save this video as a reference to come back to.

As a GH5 owner, I may get both the V90 SD Cards and a external recorder for those 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 60p shots. I've seen that weird artifacts appear with the use of ProRes 422 in the final image. That recording internally has a more consistent result, especially in All-I. I've seen 3 stress tests that had this result. Especially in ProRes 422 but not so much DNxHR HQX.

Went back to reference this great video! Still not clear on weather IPB is lower quality. People mention motion artifacts but I couldn't find a single example of this vs ALL-I. This is all to figure out weather I'd actually need V90 cards for A7SIII if I'm fine with transcoding workflow.

Like you my brain is not impeded in its speed. You do a great job of pacing ... considering you're holding back from your RT speed...I understand. : ). Great content, well organized. There are only a couple other video tech people making videos as thorough and concise as these. Well done! ... I mean well UNdone. CIAO

I've been mystified for years by the codecs and myriad of numbers, but I think I get it now. Thanks! I've had the Ninja V set on my EOS R on ProRes 422, now I understand why that's the right choice for me because I edit with FCPX on my Mac using the Ninja V SSD as an external drive. Now just need to work out what BT.2020 means :)

thanks to Mr Wikipedia...awesome content here... as a run and gun filmer i use the 8bit given by the sony a7iii...i don't think there's such a big difference when using a external monitor and put that 8bit into ProResHQ...probably better in slog....but as i mention, as a run and gunner weight is a big issue...best rgds from Switzerland and all the thumbs up...

On top of cheaper media, also consider the shooting functionalities of a device like the Ninja or Shogun. If you're shooting in a LOG gamma, you'll definitely want to apply an MLUT, and few cameras offer you waveform, histogram, peaking, AND false color. All things you'll find on the Atomos recorders.

I currently use 3 acquisition formats: Raw, H.264/5, and ProRes, Edited via ProRes Proxy, Exported H.264/5, ProRes, and several other windows codecs depending on client needs
