Today is Wednesday 2 November 2022 and in Ukraine it is already the 252nd day of the great war, the great grief, the great calamity that Russia brought upon the peaceful Ukrainian land.
Again, heavy fighting took place throughout the entire front line yesterday. The enemy is again relentlessly shelling our peaceful towns and villages, violating humanitarian law and the rules and customs of warfare, destroying the critical infrastructure of our towns and villages. Yesterday, our cities of Mykolayiv, Poltava, Kramatorsk, and Pavlivka in the Donetsk region were particularly affected. But the Lord God blessed all of us to see this new day, to live until this morning, although Ukraine this morning mourns her sons and daughters who died during the last day.
But we say: Ukraine is standing! Ukraine is fighting! Ukraine is praying!
Today, I want to continue thinking with you about what obligations the state and society have in relation to the family. How can we, Christians of Ukraine, lay solid foundations for our state existence after our victory. Because we see that victory is approaching and we must think of how to rebuild a healthy, new, and updated Ukrainian society on the ruins left by the war.
Our Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky prophetically predicted back in the horrors of the First and Second World Wars that not only in the deep Middle Ages, but most likely also in the future, Ukrainian Kyiv would play a great role for the whole of Western Europe. Perhaps a decisive role. And it is for this mission, this decisive role of Kyiv and Ukraine for the European civilization of the future, that we must prepare today. To think about it, to build these strong, mighty foundations of ours. And it all starts with the family.
In our past reflections, you and I talked about the fact that the family, as a unique, faithful, inseparable fruitful union of a man and a woman, has a special calling from God. A unique task that no one else can accomplish. And that task is the birth and upbringing of children. It is in the bosom of the family that the future is born. It is very important to realize that no one can remove himself from this calling. Moreover, our parents should realize that no one has the right to take away from them the right and vocation to raise their children.
We remember how in the times of communism, when the enemy of our people and the Church was very concerned that, God forbid, future generations in the family not accept the consciousness of belonging to their people, not accept their culture, language, and the way to their native Church, and therefore tried to take children away from the family. Depriving parents of the right to raise their own children. We see that today the Russian occupier is doing the same thing on Ukrainian land, under the slogan of "denazification" directly taking children away from their parents so that, God forbid, Ukrainian identity and consciousness not be passed on to future generations.
So, dear parents, you have a unique vocation, a unique right to raise your children according to the worldview with which you live yourselves. Most importantly, you have a special task and calling to pass on your faith in God to your children. To raise them capable of creating their own families. To raise them capable of love. All others-school, church, society-should only help relatives to fulfill their unique task and vocation. Therefore, I urge our parents to take care that in schools it is possible to educate your children on the healthy basis of family values and Christian morality. Allowing lessons of family values and love for one's neighbour to be brought to school is the duty of the state if it cares about the future. Because it is better to have lessons about human dignity, love, and family values than criminal cases about victims of domestic violence.
The state must fulfill its duty towards the family and do everything to help parents raise their children correctly. Because it is inherent only to dad and mom to nurture in the depths of their children's hearts that seed of all those intimate moments of relationships, which those children must later develop in their personal lives.
So, the family has a unique mission that cannot be taken away from it. We must all help to fulfill this mission. Precisely because the family has such a special task in relation to future generations, to the future of the Church and the people, we must realize that all other types of partnership that can arise between people can never be called a family. A family is only a fruitful and faithful union of a man and a woman. And because it is so important to society, society must support and protect it. If we call other types of cohabitation, in particular same-sex, as a family, we thus steal the rights and obligations in relation to the real nuclear and greater family. Therefore, only the union of a man and a woman can be called...
