I retired from Amtrak in 2020 after 30 years, and can tell you this is nothing new at all. The very reason such huge amounts of drugs are ferried is because there is NO security; Amtrak has its' own inept and corrupt Police Force (The Amtrak Police) and they are worse than Reno 911, but they're not that funny. However, most drug couriers rode in a private room instead of in a coach seat. This shows how fearless they are getting because they don't even seek the privacy of a Sleeping car.

True. Anyone can ride without security screenings. Amtrak has rules and regulations but it doesn't enforce them, doesn't check anyone's belongings. I took the rail pass from south towards northeast part of the country last month as my first Amtrak train ride, and I was in disbelief about no security checks, not what I expected. I got nervous but I could only calm myself down and pray for safety.

I'm not sure about that. They definitely don't check. At least on a plane, everybody has to go through a metal detector. 🙂 btw, you need to look in the 21 foot rule. Meaning, if someone is close enough to kill you with a machete, they are MUCH too close for you to shoot them. They train you on that in the military and police (I was USN). At that range you really need either a western hand to hand combat system such as Marine Corps Martial Arts or Western Boxing, or an actual martial art such as ITF Taekwondo or Karate or Filipino Martial Arts (Arnis/Eskrima/Kali). You're not going to have time to draw a firearm at that point. Check out the video on here (we can't put links, would if I could), "too close don't underestimate the knife", it's a police training video. The Filipino-American guy you see in the video with the knife is Dan Inosanto, a guru (that's his rank, "guru") in Filipino Martial Arts, which is famous for its knife fighting techniques. He was also Bruce Lee's best friend and is a master of Lee's martial art, Jeet Kune Do, as well as being a veteran of the 101st Airborne.

Again, on Amtrak's web site, title "Firearms in Checked Baggage": "All firearms (rifles, shotguns, handguns, taser guns, starter pistols) must be unloaded and in an approved, locked hard-sided container not exceeding 62" L x 17" W x 7" D (1575 mm x 432 mm x 178 mm). The passenger must have sole possession of the key or the combination for the lock to the container. The weight of the container may not exceed 50 lbs/23 kg. Smaller locked, hard-sided containers containing smaller unloaded firearms such as handguns, taser guns and starter pistols must be securely stored within a suitcase or other item of checked baggage, but the existence of such a firearm must be declared. Firearms/ammunition may not be carried in carry-on baggage; therefore, checked baggage must be available on all trains and at all stations in the passenger's itinerary."

There will never be TSA type screening on Amtrak. It might be possible at a major train station (like Los Angeles) but most stops are on open platforms, and may only be for a couple minutes. Years ago there was crazy dude that literally decapitated another passenger on a Greyhound bus at rest stop. Less than a 1% chance of any kind of violent crime happening on a train but still frightening.

Roomettes only for me. Keep my door locked, and eat In my room. Always try to get lower level Roomette near bathroom. You never know who's on the train, and what kind of drama could unfold. Still prefer it to flying, and won't take the Greyhound ever again.

When I travel by Amtrak I get a whole sleeper car. Yes it’s expensive but I feel safer. Not all can afford it. I think people traveling on Amtrak should have to go through Metal detectors and have their luggage scanned. It should be no different than boarding a plane.

There should TSA and X-ray machines before these people try to reach the platforms before they board for their trains. What is going on with the countries Railroad and their safety rule’s & regulations. No Drugs or Alcohol, no firearm, and explosives otherwise they’re looking into jail time

I’ve ridden that train twice in my life. I was shocked to see Crazy homeless people on the train. Lunatics. No security. I don’t regularly use public transportation. If ever. Usually airplanes are ok. It might be the last time I take Amtrak.

Language can be so imprecise. Reading the headline, I thought someone had attacked the train with a machete, only to learn that the attack was on a passenger.
