Fun fact: although, Mr. Bearegaurde and Mrs.Teavee are the only PARENTS that sing in the musical veruca sings "With the rubbish and the other wasteful things she tossed aside" (not in broadcast recording)

(Spoken) Wonka(noticing Mrs. Teavee drink from her canister, takes it during the fallowing): No alcohol in factory, I’m afraid, Mrs. Teavee. Mrs. Teavee: Oh, it’s just lemonade.😅 (Wonka incredulously takes a sip, just to be sure) Mrs. Teavee: ……. Home made? 😰 Wonka(impressed by what he’s tasted): You/I must share(give me)/get the recipe sometime! 😳 (Scene continues from there as on the soundtrack)

Why is the musical so depressing
@LittleMissRequiem

Probably because all the other versions of the story were at worst just ambiguous as to the possibly horrific fates of the naughty kids. Some versions will even offer reassurances that they’re all okay, especially the 2005 movie which clearly shows them all leaving the factory alive. This keeps the potential fridge horror of the story to a manageable level, allowing the happier and more whimsical elements (Charlie’s story arc, exploring the factory, etc.) to shine through a lot more without being overshadowed too much by negative implications. But the musical, to varying degrees depending on the version, more heavily implies and/or clearly shows the naughty kids’ horrible fates, to the point where the sheer nightmare fuel factor overshadows the lighter/happier aspects of the story. The end result overall is very bittersweet and/or black comedy at best and “WTH CHARLIE HOW CAN YOU STILL LIKE THIS PSYCHO” at worst. *AUGUSTUS* is sucked up a tube into the fudge room as usual, but the musical (specifically the song “Auf Wiedersehen, Augustus Gloop”) INTENTIONALLY paints a much more gory and sadistic mental image for the audience of Augustus possibly being LITERALLY turned into fudge and possibly being eaten afterwards, complete with the Oompa Loompas deciding not to throw away the resulting scraps because they “love candy pork”, and Wonka very bluntly expressing disgust at the possibility of Augustus’ crushed body messing up the taste of the toffee or even leaving BONES in the fudge. *VIOLET* literally explodes onstage at the end of the “Juicy” song, complete with blueberry guts raining down on the cast. Wonka simply claims that “her bubble burst” and has the Oompa Loompas scoop her up before she “ferments”, implying that MAYBE they can still put her back together if they can find all of her in time, but whether or not they manage to do so is unclear. *VERUCA* is dropped down the garbage chute as usual in the original West End version, but in the Broadway version, she is explicitly TORN LIMB FROM LIMB onstage by the squirrels, who show off her severed head and dismembered body parts to the audience before leaving to dump them into the garbage chute. The only hint in the latter that Veruca MIGHT still be alive is that she is heard screaming “DADDY!” a few moments later, with Wonka assuring everyone that the Oompa Loompas will find a way to put her back together (“They’re a whiz with a glue stick!”). *MIKE* is the only known survivor among the naughty kids, but unlike in other versions, his mother DOES NOT want him restored to his normal size and decides to keep him small forever. Pretty hard to have a happy/funny/charming kids’ story with all of THAT included.

@@LittleMissRequiem that's why i don't like the musical that much. It misses the point of the story. It's suppose to be how 4 rotten children learn their lesson and the 1 good wins a prize. This musical can't difference the charming from the graphic. There's It Must Be Believed To Be Seen,a beautiful song where Wonka explains how fantastical his factory is and how,althought his home was bland,he always found a way the world tasted good,and then there's 'Let's nuke-a Veruca'. There's a Pure Imagination reprise,where Charlie expresses how he won't have to dream anymore 'cause this dream is unbetterable,and then 'Goodbye,mr Wonka *maniacal laugh* ' In the end,the one who watches this records to the end won't say "What a charming ending!",instead "DON'T CHARLIE,PLS DON'T STAY WITH THAT PSYCHO!"

@@Anonimous-gk5im NGL, I feel the same way. The songs in and of themselves are well-written, and the musical does have its good points as you just mentioned, but as a CatCF adaptation it relies so much on shock value that it ends up losing the heart of the original story. Say what you will about the other versions, but they each kept at least the core identity of the story more or less intact. Even the 2005 version, for all its flaws, still kept the heart and morals of the story intact, and even had enough sense to negate the fridge-horror aspect by clearly showing that the naughty kids were all alive and well in the end (albeit visibly changed in some cases, especially Mike and Violet). It’s a shame, because a Willy Wonka musical is a gold mine of potential if done right, and on their own the songs themselves are well-made, but the attempts at edgy black comedy serve no purpose other than to overshadow the whimsical charm and heartfelt story that made the original so beloved.
