white is currently down 2points of material black knight has white King in check white only has 3 possible moves here, all losing, via extra material lost or checkmate possible moves 1) King to g1 2) King to e2 3) pawn takes knight on e3 1) white: King to g1 black: rook takes knight on e1, checkmate no piece can take the black rook, and all escape squares for the white king are covered by the black rook and bishop checkmate 2) white: King to e2 black: rook sacrifice taking knight on e1 white: King takes rook on e1 (or by not taking loses big material and thus the match) black: knight takes pawn on g2! checking the king while forking the rook white: must move King out of check as no piece can take the black knight black: knight takes rook, thus gaining 4 extra points of material this is a winning end-game for black up 6 points of material and leaving white with a bad island pawn structure 3) white: pawn takes knight on e3 black: responds with bishop g3! attacking both the rook and knight, and threatening mate in 1 with rook takes knight on e1# on the next move ...white cannot defend the e1 square with rook to e4 as the black pawn on f5 defends it white: King e2 is forced to prevent checkmate black: rook takes knight on e1 and checks the white King ...rook is protected by the bishop on g3 so the white King cannot take ...no other piece can take the black rook white: King to any of these spaces to get out of check: d2, d3, f3 black: bishop takes rook on h4 this is a winning end-game for black up 7 points of material and leaving white with a poor pawn structure sorry for any typos, wrote this up quick
