As the event itself commemorates its 50th anniversary, the Southeast Asian Games went to the region's only landlocked nation - Lao PDR.
Taking place in the capital Vientiane from 9 to 18 December 2009, this marked Laos' first occasion in playing hosts to the SEA Games; the country was initially due to hold the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games, only for themselves to decline its honors citing financial difficulties, and the hosting rights was later re-given to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Vientiane SEA Games attracted more than 3,100 athletes from 11 nations, but compared to 43 sports back at the previous edition at Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand, the 2009 Games featured only 25; Olympic sports such as basketball, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics and weightlifting were excluded from the event due to lack of facilities in Vientiane, while water sports like canoeing, rowing, sailing, triathlon and windsurfing were absent as well, noting Laos' lack of a coastline.
"Welcome To SEA Games" was among one of the numerous songs that were all written for the SEA Games. There were 33 other official songs, which include "Go Laos", "SEA Games Harmony" and "Vientiane Games", while a campaign song from Games sponsor Beerlao was also composed specifically for the event.
