A commanding and thrilling performance of a great work of Louis Vierne. I have played it twice in my own career. Congratulations, James.

I've heard this piece so many times, especially when I was in Cambridge and things were 'normal' and you'd be hearing fab organ playing daily - and this is honestly the best performance I've seen online! Thank you, James. Be lovely to hear it live...also, would love to hear you do the Finale from Vierne's Organ Symphony!

One of my favourite organs. Marcel Dupre, the consultant for the new organ, insisted the Henry Willis III instrument should be positioned on the west end gallery so that it would speak down the nave of the cathedral. Also an interesting specification, one unusual oddity being a separate 3 1/5 Tenth as part of the flue work on the Great division. One of the gems of organs in England.

Listened to this recording multiple times now, and don't plan on stopping any time soon. Amazingly played, great to see the Organist in Residence (at the time of Nov 2021) showing off the amazing organ of Westminster Cathedral!

Under the organ case in Westminster Cathedral is a clock which was annoying now disconnected. The Willis Grand Organ also is unusual in that the Solo organ stops are found on the left hand side of the player when it is the other way around. The full organ and 32 is loud !

Interested to know what you are hearing through your headphones - is it a relay of the organ from a good position of balance? How does the technology work in terms of getting it to your headphones?
@JohnLNixon

They are ear-protectors - necessary at the west end console in that you are virtually inside the instrument, which can produce damaging levels of volume when near full organ.

There are microphones on each side about 25 metres down the cathedral which connect to the headphones. Useful in some repertoire but there is a slight delay on the sound which makes fast music tricky. I think in this video, I used them to protect my ears from the Great mixture!

Notre-Dame every time. Westminsters is far to cumbersome for the finger work (especially the finale) as you can see here.

@@xavioxwhat exactly do you mean by that? Notre Dame's organ no longer sounds or plays like the instrument Vierne composed this on, which certainly then had a far more cumbersome action than the Willis at Westminster Cathedral.
