These aren't just Vietnam era boots. I have a pair that I wore in the Army until we weren't allowed to which was in 2005, or 2006. They were a lot more comfortable than wearing jump boots, or other full leather boots in the NC summer.

The one thing that I don’t like about the boot, does not come with cushioning in the shoe

Use two pair of insoles per boot. Wear extra socks, nylon dress socks next to your skin then heavy socks. I just got a pair and am starting to break them in. I am concerned about the rubber soles. They smell of cheap rubber. The kind that falls apart after 3 months. I have experience with cheap Chinese rubber. Some people can't stand the smell and send them back. Hot bathtub is a great starting point. How have yours worked? Did they loosen up?

I’ve tried to loosen them up but with no success! I’ve recently looked at the boots and the rubber looks like it’s cracking. They are overall very cheap boots :|
