My dad was 105 pounds and 5'4 when he turned 18 in 1966. His dad (who was Army) told him, "Son, you better enlist, and not in the army, because you will get drafted and they WILL make you a tunnel rat". So my dad enlisted in the Navy...right after he enlisted, the called his number in the draft. Luckily they honored his enlistment. He still has baggage from that war. He is extremely claustrophobic and can be short fused. I can't even imagine if he had been a tunnel rat. My grandfather essentially saved my dad's life with his insight.

Extremely sad that these men went through genuine horrifying human experiences that no human should ever go through just because rich politicians didn't like that smaller countries were finally gaining independence. What's worse is that Vietnamese people were just fighting colonialism but were put as the bad guy for "communism". It's casual USA not caring about their citizens and only thinks about how they can benefit from them and smaller countries. Now because of the U.S. government thousands of veterans have extreme trauma with life changing conditions and at the end it was only to benefit the greedy selfish inhumane rich. Really sad that soldiers were brainwashed to think they are doing it for a good cause, I only have respect for the soldiers who knew nothing about the truth and were made to belief it was for the greater good, may they rest in peace.

That lavender uniform? Never saw that in any Branch of the service, I guess uniform something he had made up? I think it sounds true, skeptical of skin pealing off with socks and not getting any medical treatment, infantry live by their feet. At least awards were real, and not a poop load of ribbons like most fake hero’s, I believe he is genuine, just proud of his service now. I wouldn’t have volunteered to be a tunnel rat, it is terrifying just to think about it. Vietnam Vet, 18 months, 1969-1970, and somehow did not have any protestors to deal with, and as I was flying from LA to Va we were snowed in at Chicago and the airline crew put me up in a hotel and took me out to dinner, I get teared up now as I think how wonderful that crew was to me.

It is not military sanctioned dress. However it is a civilian dress and he is part of or in a leadership role in some kind of purpleheart society. That is why it is purple. He also drives a purple 70s model restored chevy truck with some kind of purple heart society sign on the door, could not quite make it out as it was in the background of him and a tad blurry.
