My grandfather served on a carrier in WWII as a gunner's mate and firefighter. He was also at Pearl when it was bombed, 2 (twin) uncles served in Vietnam 1 on a Destroyer, 1 on the crash crew at Midway. Government would not allow both of them to serve together or in the same combat zone. Midway however was considered a part of the Vietnam war zone because it was Midway through the ocean and a key place for materials. 2 cousin and 2 other uncles Served in the Army in Vietnam, one of the uncles was a medic, I've had cousin's in the Marines, coastguard, and Army and an uncle in the Air Force. Furthermore, it happened right before the US election, that surely made Johnson to get down of the president chair. In order to get more tickets before the election, he had to sit in the Paris Peace Talk and stopped the North Vietnam bombing campaign

I am very proud of what we did in Vietnam. Our boys fought against an enemy that was depraved and willing to commit any atrocity against their own people and us. A friend of mine had to kill a child strapped with satchel and grenades and told by the VC to run at the Americans. The child was shot dead before he reached our boys and blew into a pink mist that puffed just before all the black smoke! Yes, NVA/VC were terrible and cruel and deserved grisly deaths that we gave in spades.

We inserted and extracted grunts and delivered materials and hauled dead out. Shot down twice in hot LZs. Minor injuries for me death for other crew members. Almost everyone I knew well was killed in action so when I go to these reunions none of my guys are there. I ran an M-60 and that machine is murder. Don't know or care how many of those bastards I killed. I worried over it when I was green but then I saw a grunt who has been skinned alive and was still alive for a while. Then I knew I was killing sub-humans and didn't bother me anymore. In free fire zones, the whole Valley almost I killed everything I could. It was all so F ed up. DC was afraid to win, brass was going by body count instead of ground. Crazy days. Recon what God thinks about all the killing.

At 3:59 there is a question: was this fierce resistence with relative casualties and huge consumption of materiel necessary? In my view it is often necessary that, during a war, who wants to win must also show a strong determination. If US frces had given up this "remote" (but strategical) base, NVA could have thought that their enemy had little determination and victory would have been easier

The American corporate system thinks itself ingenious because it discovered that BUYING a stooge Clique to basically screw over the people of their own country, and all it would cost the corporate system is minimum payment for whatever the resources are to the stooge clique, and enough 2nd or 3rd Generation Weaponry for The Clique To maintain their power, usually doing roundups and tortures and disappearances and all sorts of things that the United States doesn't mind as long as the resources keep flowing. And you people who support the Vietnam War, you seem to have no problem with this because it's all covered, supposedly, by the term good old capitalist business and the ridiculous fact that there is a so-called democratic election in these stooge countries! Can you tell me how it is democracy when the only candidates that the people are allowed to choose from are corporate Stooges? This has much to with with why Kim Il Jong went to Stalin for support of his invasion than to Mao who was interested at the time. Kim refused Maos offer of help. It was only later when things became dire that Kim allowed the Chinese into the war. As I stated above, there was concern over the spread of communism at the time.

Estimates are the major reports of probable deaths as no known sources are actually in existance. Same as your 3.5 million. Personally, I believe the numbers are much much lower. The estinate include 20,000 Chinese killed in North Vietnam while the Chinese only claim 20. The 'military machines' killed each other, not civilians.

@mas360 Please realize that up to 800,000 boat people who tried to leave Vietnam after the north gained control are part of that number, as well as another 100-200 thousand who are thought to have died in the reeducation camps. Tens of thousands of innocent tribal leaders who were murdered by the VC and NVA are also in that number as well as the consolidation of power by both sides by both sides once divided. While the armies on each side killed anoth 2,000,000 of each other.

Both bases where important USMC bases an were under sustained PAVN assault mostly by artillery which had better range than USMC artillery. After the bases where not sustainable due to casualties the bases were closed down. Those actions show defeat in a conventional sense. Direct PAVN action getting direct results.
@Spadadiforza remember the mass concentrations of russians, polish and chinese freighters in the bay of hai phong... according to some reports, chinese use to fire at american planes without north vietnam or russians approval. thats one of the reasons why the USA didnt have the pants to go and invade the north to finish the war, they just decided to pull their pants down and run away.

@dimitboris ...and I never said they lost militarily, but the quote you attributed to Giap was completely false. The problem was that the United States was that they could never win the war militarily, because the doctrine of "search and destroy" did not match well with an enemy that did not care about military losses. There's no point in arguing any of this with you, because you haven't looked up or researched any of this. You're only regurgitating what other people have told you.

United states invaded Iraq to defeat Saddam and recover WMDS. There were no WMDS but we accomplished our main objective. We invade Afghanistan to hunt down Osama and destroy the taliban. We have been fighting the taliban for 8 years and our strategy now is to stabilize their Government so they can defend themselves. and for why the strategy, well we learned from Iraq that if we can stabilize the Government they can take over and the Iraqi government has been doing a good job since then.

@TalksWithDirt What is strategic rationale? At the first level it is very simple. What are the current conditions in the areas now? What do I want them to be? Who has to die in order me to force a transition from the state the ares is in now to the way I want it to be? If that list is an ever increasing sphere of people who need to die, then you're screwed because your goal cannot fit into the local reality.

it wasn't psycho. I agree we shouldn't have gone into Vietnam but politicians weren't just thirsty for blood we were fighting a war against communism back than we didn't just randomly pick Vietnam and Korea to invade we had a reason which was to stop the communist threat. Like you said they were no threat well our government didn't know that because communism was on the rise and the cold war started the red scare.

@dimitboris It wasn't propaganda, but Kissinger and Nixon were definitely playing a double game. If you want to know a little more about the whole "peace with honor" thing and what a crock of shit it was, you should definitely check out "No Peace, No Honor: Nixon, Kissinger, and Betrayal in Vietnam" by Larry Berman. They knew damn well the North Vietnamese would launch an attack as soon as we left. We sold out the South Vietnamese. Kissinger to this day will still not debate Berman about it.

@Spadadiforza Con Tien, FSB Ripcord, lz albany. I could name a few more battles lost but you havent got the time. If you comprehensively study the vietnam war, you will realise the us military were out foxed and their firepowers effectiveness was nullified by PAVN tactics. Others will say the us military beat them in every battle. One thing was for certain the PAVN chose when to fight and retreat, they controlled the battles. The US military was chasing shadows Most of the time

@mas360 Lets not talk about Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge and the killing fields. It just upsets the whole theory of nothing 'really' happened after the the communist backed rebels came into power. Its better to move on with the Barney philosiphy. "I love you, you love me. The US is bad, can't you see." Second verse same as the first, only lets include Laos as well. Now we can all sing the same song.

The fear of communism. US did not just attack because it just wants to pick on communism for being different its because capitalism fears that it will be overwhelmed by communism. also may i ask you do you believe that going to Korea was a bad thing as well?
