I want to develop a sophisticated VR experience for Oculus/Vive, in which a person enters the attic space of their recently dead parents, finds a Viewmaster Stereoscope in a dusty old box of toys, points it at a single dim light bulb, and uses it. No puzzles, no ghosts, monsters or narrative. Just the Viewsonic Stereoscope and these exact slides.

Yes, or some disturbing images you weren't meant to see, which leads you to the secret lab in the basement which in turn accidentally releases the virus that turns humans into zombies, and then you gotta survive in your house and border up the windows and kill zombies. It's a good idea for a game, you should call it _the view finder experience._

I used to work in a medical library, and we had a collection of med school Viewmaster reels. Couldn't tell you how practical they really are as a study or reference tool, but the idea seems sound enough: anatomical charts, photos of innards and what have you, all in stomach-turningly crisp stereoscopic 3D. Anyway, just another use to which the format has been applied, to go along with the kids' entertainment, virtual tourism and toilet promos.

Elgauno The woodcutter slays the wolf... But it turns out the grandmother was just wearing a fur coat she made herself and went for the Indian chief style, where the head of the wolf was used as a hat. The little white riding hood came in, got scared and cried for help (cannot blame her, she first picked flowers and then magic mushrooms and ate half of them...). The woodcutter came inside, saw the "wolf" and threw it outside of the house. The white riding hood saw her mistake and went to hug her grandmother and tell the woodcutter not to kill the "wolf" as it's her grandma, but it was too late, and the woodcutter chopped her right in the chest, cutting her heart artery and making blood sprinkle everywhere, soaking the poor white riding hood in blood. That's why she was later called red riding hood - she always wore the hood as a memento of her grandmother, and due to the dried blood it was dark red in color, but shined bright red in the sun. That's a true story, just like the thing Brothers Grimm used to collect from the people from the villages they visited (Sleeping Beauty was raped many times by the "prince" during her coma and had a child, Snow White forced midgets into labor to collect gold for her, that kind of stuff...). Truly grim stuff, if you've asked me... We live in such a mad world... Such a sad, sad world... #Kappa

I am sure they did. Viewmaster made a camera for people to take their own 3D photos. I think it was 68 images on a roll of 35mm film. If you did not want to send to Viewmaster for processing and mounting you needed the card disc mounts and a special cutter for cutting out the images which were notched for precise location on the disc mount.

I had one in 1997, when I was 5 years old, with special tie-in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" slides. I loved it sooo much and it got me very excited for that movie as a big lover of "Jurassic Park" (even if "The Lost World" ended up not being that amazing). There was a Viewmaster being used in "Jurassic World" by the younger kid character in an earlier scene - the slides being pictures of dinosaurs - and I had the biggest grin on my face when that scene came up because I immediately related it to my time with my old "Lost World" Viewmaster. "Good grief, that kid's basically who I was at that point!", I thought. So yeah, Viewmasters were fun little novelties and its nice to see them suddenly talked about a lot more as of late. :O Sorta wish I still had mine!

We had a slightly different version of these in the GDR, the principle was the same, but not with the rotary system. Our version had cards which were put into the unit at the top side, and then pulled by hand at the bottom, with a perforation at the side which snapped the pictures in-place, one by one. The cards available for it usually showed scenes from fairy-tales of the Brothers Grimm, arranged with dolls. I really was into them when I was small, I especially liked the "Frau Holle" one, where in one scene "Frau Holle" shook its bed out of the window to let it snow, and the 3D effect of the snow was really awesome.

Yeah my parents spent the '60's going around the world working on the Cunard liners and I've got a few dozen discs from many countries. Got loads of 1970's/80's Doctor Who ones with original programme stills.

I loved mine but I'm weird. I had mostly Disney (although my 101 Dalmatians didn't have that scene I don't recall) but I also had the Muppets in 3D and it worked really well. A western town and Animal growing extra large as i recall.

Your bring up an excellent point. Make something right the first time, no crippling DRM all while using a format that can be easily duplicated by anyone using simple technology.

I'm glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s when we had stuff like this as kids. I would hate to be a child now, living your life through social media and spending all day on Facebook. I don't use Facebook and I don't use Twitter, and things like the Viewmaster are still quite special even now. I had a look through one again the other day and I can tell you they are still very impressive, and I enjoyed looking at the photographs more through that than I would have on a screen. Everything now revolves around tapping a screen on black slab of plastic.

Stephen Ogley I have neither Facebook nor Twitter, I had an account but never used it so it got deleted. There are still quite a few stereoscopes being sold today, and DIY projects remain popular among people my age.

I remember one of my local restaurants having these just sitting on the table with the slides sitting to the side. It was fun looking at the food through one before ordering.

I'm 20 years old and this video reminded me that have one of those lying around somewhere. I think got it in 2000 because that's when the reels were made. The entire thing is discovery channel themed with pictures of animals and spaceships. Who know how long it would be lying there if not for that video, thanks!!

Film has a damned good resolution, especially when you cram your eye so close to it. Some of those things used Kodachrome, so the colors were bright and vibrant.
