FYI, this kit goes for about $30 US, which I consider a fair price for what you get.

I got some of those spark wheels from Ebay when they were cheap. I liked it and keep one on my keychain. You do not need any tools to replace the flint. I like the one handed option (if an injured arm) and if I find a busted bic I can break it open and use that flint if I need it. But I lost two due to it unscrewing and falling away. I even had a small lock washer on it. They do have a tiny metal plug at the top of the spring. I super glued it to the spring so I would not lose the plug. GOD Bless you and your families

Definitely a solid kit. I carry a little flint wheel like that and some of the waxed tinder tabs in a cache cap. You can tease out just a little fluff from the end of the tab and light it with a spark from the flint wheel. Use the flame to ignite some other tinder or a candle and then extinguish for multiple uses from just one tab. With 12 tabs... that's a bunch of fires.

I am thinking that ointment is there not only as an accelerant but also as a burn ointment in case your fire really takes off on you unexpectedly. I think I would get rid of all the plastic bags except for the one containing the spare ferrocerium rod-lets to make more room, and I'd seal the tin with electrician's tape to keep the tinder dry, thereby including more flame extender. The extra room might allow some fatwood slivers, or a birthday candle, or just make packing easier.

As usual, excellent video and fire kit made even better with your addition. The only other item I could think of would be the addition of some UCO matches and striker. Maybe 6-10 would fit? Really looking forward to your diy videos coming up! Thanks Eric...good job and well done!

You could also add some cotton scraps in the pouch to make char cloth from. Or char found fuel, and use the pouch to stow the gear and the tin to stow the char goods.

Yes, that’s not a bad kit. I have a few of the Überleben tindår wick fire kits. It has the rope type starter. I’ll add a spark wheel or small ferro, and basically all the items found in this kit. Maybe a piece of flint and a steel for it. And some char cloth. These little tins are fun to build with.

Nice kit, good review. Thought that as well as the mini bic a flat pack of storm matches like you get in some of the European ration packs might be worth adding. Also maybe some fat wood might fit in the pouch along side the tin. Cheers Stu NZ

The brass sleeve is to carry an ember within. It’s a modern version of the Apache Match. Of course if one has their rope/sleeve until handy, why not just have a Bic in the ol’ watch pocket and a ferro on the key ring?😉

In addition to the Bic, I would add a few windproof matches, with a striker glued inside the lid of the tin. One other thing I would do is replace (if it fits) the flint in the sparking wheel with a Zippo one. Gives bigger sparks.

What? No fatwood? It's a really nice kit. I'd hate to have to punch a hole in that nice tin and throw it into the fire to make some char cloth though.
