The Ramnami Samaj of Chhattisgarh are a living testament of peaceful and effective opposition against caste system in India. When they were denied access to Shri Ram in the temple or to even utter his name in public, they made their bodies ‘living temples of Ram’ by tattooing his name on them. The ink for the tattoo is prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Kerosene oil is burnt in a lamp and covered with an earthen pot. The soot collected on the inside walls of the pot is scraped and mixed gradually with small quantities of water to produce the ink. Their clothing and headgear set them apart from the people and communities that shunned them. They are known to promote a simple lifestyle, opposing orthodox customs and rituals. Their Ram is ‘Nirgun’ and they believe that chanting ‘Ram-Ram’ is enough to purify the place, time and moment.
