In this video I craft a folded and sewn leather belt from the viking age and complete it with a home made bronze buckle from the time period. I use mostly homemade simple tools and all iron tools is replicas from the viking age. If you like VIKING AGE LEATHERWORKING and traditional leathercraft then this video is just for you.
Notes: the best is to cut the entire belt strip in one piece that fits around your waist but as seen in this video two smaller pieces can be joined to reach full lenght. I use waxed linen thread for sewing but a modern needle since I still havent made periode ones. The riveting is fairly easy with an anvil or iron as underlay. It can be done with stone or rock as well but the moss covered stone I had around was a bit too soft. That made the riveting a bit hard. Its also much easier using a small ball peen hammer to round the rivet head nicely. But the back of the axe will do.
Read this brilliant article for further info on authentic viking age belts. It seems that a lot of the belts from the periode was folded and sewn i various ways and combining different materials etc - rather than just a thick strip of leather for a simple belt.
