Here, in Ireland, we know Thor as Tuireann, yet most of his mythos is preserved under the name of Fergus mac Roich or mac Leide. He wields the caladbolg or sometimes called the caladcholg. He rides on a chariot drawn by two horses, he is the foster father of Cú Chulainn and consort of Medb. Several myths that link him to Thor are: Fergus swinging his caladbolg to strike Conchobar but it doesn't buge parallels Thor striking Skrymir's head but it doesn't effect him. Both gods are really attacking a mountain or mound as their blows are redirected thence. Fergus gets his caladbolg taken, and Thor's hammer is stolen by a mischievous figure, i.e. Ailill mac Mata and Loki Laufeyjarson. Yet, Fergus doesn't dress as a woman. Tuireann's enmity with Lug parallels Agamnenon's enmity with Achilles. Tuireann's name closely matches tha of Gaulish Taranis, whose mythic parallel is found in the Arthurian legends of Sir Kay, whose original name is most likely Taran. In Welsh, lightning is called mellt, etymologically related to Norse Mjöllnir. Arthur (in the role of Lug) insults sir Kay (in the role of Tuireann) like Agamemnon does with Achilles.

I just got back from a two week long visit to Stockholm. Used the occasion to also visit Sigtuna, Gamla Uppsala and few museums with exhibitions from the Viking times, including Viking museum, historical museum and museums at Gamla Uppsala and Sigtuna and a vist to Runsta stoneship burial and (allegedly) Bjorn Ironside's burial mound.. Although I knew most of the things before, it is always nice to find some new detail. So this video is a nice continuation of my last two weeks of exploration.

Thank you sooo much. I am an American metalsmith. I learned”Etruscan weave” from a fellow artisan in Pike Street Matket years ago. It is also called loop on loop weaving. I find in the archaeological record in Etruscans Italy, Mesopotamia, Roman, etc, but in my research, no “Viking weave”. The Etruscan weave is what is being labeled all over the internet as Viking weave. Please, please, if you have any archaeological artifacts, I would so much appreciate any pictures. My daughter recently went to Dublin(started by Vikings) and they specifically asked for “Viking weave” artifacts. I have been searching for at least 9 years. Any info is so much appreciated.

I would be very glad if you could answer my inquiry! Just last week I was in Gudvangen in Norway just west of Bergen about halfway to Lærdal and visited the Vikingby there where I bought a little Mjölnir pendant from one of the shops in the village made from gold-plated Messing. The seller told me it was handmade in Norway from his friend who molded the Messing and it was his uncle who plated it with gold stemming from Norway. While I have no reason to be distrustful about this information I would still be very happy if you could tell me if you know anything about the place. I can at least confirm that all the iron works sold in the village truly are handmade in Gudvangen since I've seen the Smith with my own eyes, he does it in the very traditional manner!

Great and informative video. A very interesting subject. I wear a Mjolnir made by a Dutch smith who attends medieval festivals. It's not 100% the same as the archeological findings, but I like its rough iron apearance. For me it's a way to honor my pre-christian ancestors. A question: were there any spear-like pendants, like Gungnir, worn? Or was there another way to honor Odin? Greetings from the Netherlands!

I have to correct that. The first Thor's hammers did not come from modern Germany. But from northern Germany, the Frisians and Saxons were the first to wear Thor's hammers around their necks. See Thorhammer von Immenstedt. „"Finally, there is another remarkable Thor’s hammer find from Dithmarschen on the German North Sea coast, which today is almost completely forgotten. During the excavation of the Immenstedt burial site in 1880, a bronze Thor’s hammer (Fig. 9) was found strung along a chain of coloured pearls. It was located in the neck area of a female inhumation grave in tumulus 14 P. The extremely fragile find was carefully excavated along with the surrounding soil, but unfortunately it largely disintegrated into dust because it was touched too early during the conservation process. The fact that this extraordinary find was recorded at all is a great stroke of luck, because the responsible excavation team headed by Johanna Mestorf did groundbreaking work for their time. Thus the original form and size of the Thorshammer was drawn in advance and even the coloured pearls were pulled back onto a string in the correct order. Mestorf herself has explicitly guaranteed the correctness of this work.26 Under the excavation conditions customary at that time, the Thor’s hammer of Immenstedt would otherwise certainly have been destroyed during the excavation process without any chance of being preserved for posterity. Thanks to the diligence of the excavators, however, it has been documented together with its context in a way that is still verifiable today. And this context is quite astonishing, because the burial is dated to the 8th or early 9th century27and shows without any doubt that the Thor’s hammer was worn around the neck as a pendant. Thus, the Thor’s hammer of Immenstedt is nothing less than the oldest evidence for these pendants worn as a necklace ever found. At the same time, it is also the oldest Thor’s hammer with the “classical” short handle, which is typical for Denmark and Sweden; only that this specimen from Northern Germany is several generations older than comparable pieces from the north. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the deceased could have emigrated from Scandinavia to Immenstedt. On the contrary: the south-north orientation of the burial (with the head in the south and the feet in the north) clearly points to the Old Saxons, for whom this burial practice is virtually a defining part of their identity.“
