Good acting and you can feel everything about this was sincere true friendship. In hindsight Ragnar was a bit naive to think he would be save. But love (even friendship kind of love) makes one blind sometimes :-)

I know Ragnar Lothbrook was a real man but this is a character and Travis Fimmel's work on this character has made Ragnar my favorite character in all of TV and Movies. I have never been more emotionally affected by a character than I have been by Ragnar. Especially his relationship with Athelstan. "Well done Michael Hirst!" You ladies broke my heart like the first time that our father, Ragnar the great, had to say farewell to our best friend Athelstan :( And you even wore black and dark colors... :| *Sigh* Travis did it again... No eye was left dry. Floki just couldn't help himself. He became obsessed with Athelstan, blaming all the wrongs of the world on him. But we saw it coming for a long time... We just didn't want this to really happen >:( Regarding the old man, Ragnar killed him because he didn't want the people to drop the quest for Paris in order to demand revenge on Wessex. The Paris raid can being them immense riches and immense fame for Ragnar and the other earls... War in Wessex will bring them neither. Revenge, yes. But Paris is a much bigger prize and Ragnar was willing risking lying to his people in order to make the best out of his time as a king. Judith killed that role... She is amazing! Really felt pity for her :\ We have to remember that she is pretty much a naive young girl who was given without question to a guy she doesn't know. And when Athelstan went full pagan on her, she didn't stand a chance but to fall for him. Ecbert couldn't prevent his son from punishing her, since he can't just slap his only heir in the face like that. Not when the deeds of his wife are known in public... But, he managed to bullshit hi, and everyone else, as always, making them think that Judith's son is blessed by god thanks to Athelstan. Forgot to add, although is was constantly on my mind: Sending you a huge hug!! The summer raid is not over yet, and season 4 is ahead... Lots of grand moments to be seen.
