The whole scene mirrors Ragnar and Ecbert during Ragnar’s death. Like his father before him, Ivar choses the day of his death. Ecbert came to watch as Ragnar sacrificed himself to pass on the torch to Ivar. Alfred is now watching as Ivar sacrifices himself to pass on the torch to Hvitserk. Ragnar and Ivar both saying ”Don’t be afraid” to the person they permit to kill them. Ragnar giving a big final speech about Valhalla before his death, and Ivar doing the same. The music during Ivar’s final moments is the same as the music that was played during Ragnar’s final moments. Alfred and Ivar have always been mirrors of one another in this show, and together they mirror their father and grandfather in this final episode.

I've heard that theory so many times and it's just not true. The actor playing Ivar confirmed himself that Ivar was in fact afraid of dying. Because at the end of the day he was just a kid who had to be strong and angry his entire life in order to survive. And even after all his act and pretending to be a God he shows that he was just human. Scared to die like anyone would be in his place
@Ceefore

Ivar's end was absolutely fantastic. He chose his fate just like his father. I mean, after he was stabbed, his arms gave out so he couldn't support himself any longer and his legs literally snapped in half. It was such a poetic death. He claimed to be a god and no hero could kill him. Then a scared foot soldier got right up to him. And Ivar accepted it. And Ivar crying wasn’t him being afraid of death, he was afraid of being forgotten. Of the gods forgetting who he was. That’s why his bother was telling him he would be remembered forever, because he knew that’s what he was afraid of. And in the end he got everything he wanted in his life: reputation, child and love (from his brother, Igor and perhaps even Katia)

This show has the most well written characters, and ends their storylines in the most perfect of ways. I am convinced we will never see anything like it again. Each of Ragnar's sons completed part of his story. Bjorn was a well respected king and leader. Ubbe was a true explorer. Ivar was a feared, respected war strategist. Hvitserk got wrapped up in substance abuse, beat his addiction, and became a Christian (named Athelstan). It's so poetic. Lagertha's funeral scene was one of my favorite moments in T.V. They just did such a great job with their characters. I loved King Ecbert and Alfred. I despised Aelle, which we were supposed to. There are countless others I could mention, but then we'd be here all day. This is the best TV show of all time in my opinion, and I don't see how anything could beat it.

the reason Ubbe slit his throat during the blood eagle is because he cried out. the blood eagle was meant to be one last chance for the condemned to reach valhalla. they had to withstand the entirety of the execution process without making a sound, and by doing so, they could still go to valhalla. if they cry out in pain or fear, they've already lost that chance, so continuing the process would be pointless.

Wished Alfred got to show the 'Great'. Feel like Ivar let him win instead of it being a chess match where Alfred was the better tactician. I get why as it was Ivar's arc and character... but wished it was more of a battle of master tacticians. Also the catapults in battle... oh that trope is so sad to see over and over. Scorpions or artillery like that make much more sense that artillery made for breaking walls. And the comment 'you kill as many of your own men' with artillery... only because no one uses a battle line and formation... But I get that is the cliche in every portrayal of an ancient battle... would've loved seeing Alfred and Ivar using formations and hammer and anvil tactics. But all in all it was a good send off for the show, and I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel series about the Normans. Hope to see the Normans in Sicily and those stories finally get more exposure. Like the Norman leader's wife being left in command of a city that became besieged and when her men fled she mounted a horse and grabbed a lance and ran them down and forced them to return to the battle. Medieval ladies taking charge in battle always makes me smile.
