A few notes on the events covered in this video: 1. We don't know if Guthrum and his Great Summer army arrived in Britain before or after the battle of Ashdown. 2. It is not clear if the Danes had a complete control over the north Northumbria and Alt Clud (Strathclyde). Halfdan definitely controlled the southern part of Northumbia, but his rule was shortlived.

Nice video. Did you know that Alfred while besieging Guthrum held a feast right in front of his walls knowing full well that the later was lacking food n supplies. Guthrum's fortress was a self-maintained prison until he decided to surrender. Alfred after converting Guthrum to Christianity tried to treat him like a fellow monarch. Alfred was a very forward thinking King. Good on him. My compliments to those who made this video a reality.

And this is where I as a danish history geek comes in . Yes the Guthrum was danish . Denmark it self was devided in different kingdoms at the time . A unified dainsh state did exist untill 965. When King Harold Bluetoth extended hos power to include the danish Island of Funen and Zealand . And he also converted to christianity. So Denmark is viking creation ... But after the battle of Edington Alfred did begin to fortify hos kingdom . He built the burh system . A burh was fortified town,/settlement where soldiers lived with their families . And Alfred built them alm over his kingdom . And some of later evolved into towns . So a lot of moden towns in the south of England /Britain was actully founded by Alfred . So if viking Army attacked wessex . Alfreds Army woud only be under 3 days march away . In 886 Alfred attacked London and conquered the City . To nettet defend it . He moved the population from the saxon city of London (present day Aldwych ) and moved Them into the roman city. The present day City of London district ... At the same time London got its own burh. And today that is the southwark distrct . So southwark started as settlement outside London . By the London grow and absorbed it in later times ....

Another great video. I just realized from this video that King Alfred's campaign against the Vikings led by Guthrum seems to closely resemble what happened in Mexico in 1862. Two armies of French troops (5,000-6,000 men) and Mexican Conservatives (7,000 strong) were ready to destroy the Mexican Liberals by encirclement. But, because of the Mexican Liberals' risky decision to split their forces into two divisions to combat the double threat, they won two resounding victories against both forces, forestalling any hopes for a quick conquest by France.

The Vikings have two keys problems. The first issue is that they are basically infantry. They may have moved on horseback but fight dismounted. When facing trained and armored cavalry this is a big problem. The second is that Vikings are basically tied to their ships and will withdraw from a fight if their way out is threatened. Not a bad idea but if your enemy knows this then it can be used against you with devastating effect.

Much the same as English people today, I'm sure. I thought for sure I'd have some native American DNA since there are some native Americans in my direct ancestry, but I didnt inherit any of their DNA. No African American or anything like that. No French.. weird. I'm proud to be of English ancestry, though. Is there a more storied people in all of the world? If there is, I havent learned of them.

Great video, thanks. There is a lot of support for Countisbury Windhill (Exmoor) being the arx Cynuit/Cynwit in AD 878. There have been several claims to the arx Cynuit site; Countisbury’s Iron Age promontory hillfort scheduled monument at Wind Hill (SS7449),and nearby Old Burrow, have a strong case. Wind Hill (260 meters) - the largest Hillfort promontory in England - was obviously accessible and worth defending. Near the present B3234 road, it had a coastal hillfort stronghold since the Iron Age kingdom of the Dumnonii Celts. We cannot know from here how the Vikings reached Wind Hill, though many sources including the National Trust, and Robert Higham in his “Making Anglo Saxon Devon”, claim Countisbury Hill near Lynmouth as the “location of the Viking siege led by Ubba, one of the commanders of the Great Heathen Army that invaded Anglo-Saxon England in the 860s.”

Kings and Generals Well, you's know I watch all your videos sometimes 2 or 3x and I think I prefer this style. Having studied History I enjoyed the map skills of the video.

hey @Kings and Generals ... video is about Battle of Edington 878 and there are only 20seconds of the battle? There are more detailed documented minor clashes in your other videos than this game changing battle... WHY did few farmers beat "full life soldiers" vikings army? Was it mirracle? Genius tactics from Ethelred? Or just overwhelming numbers over vikings ? Even tho , how could farmers beat soldiers? We have sooo many battles in history when even smaller army wipe out huge mass of men because they were superior in quality. Was it really so easy? :(

At the arx Cynwit (North Devon) and at Ethandun/Edington (Wiltshire) in the same year, victory was probably due to cavalry and troops in superior numbers. At arx Cynwit in 878, an important battle that is often underestimated, the Vikings laid siege to a Saxon burh, and were slaughtered by surprise at dawn. Alfred also built a system of coastal defences and stockades along the coast. Through a mixture of battles, defensive measure (see Burhs), bribes and negotiation, the Norsemen were confined into an area known as the Danelaw, covering much of the eastern side of what is now called England.

This may be stupid, but i don't like the popping sound for some of the icons that appear. It feels out of place to me.

You said in the video that Ivar left for Scandinavia. I thought he moved to Ireland where he was known as Imar and was the founder of the Ui Imar dynasty. Or are those two unrelated?

Awesome. Enjoyed it as usual, very good video! 10/10. One thing on the Viking control (albeit his reign was short lived) the control particularly in the north would probably have been absolute, albeit his reign was not. Idk if you saw my comment on your post, but check out the battle of Palatea 416 BC if I'm not mistaken. Massive Greek victory, a massacre really, ending the 2nd Greco-Persian war! Keep it up friends! P.S I must say I loved the music particularly in this one! Here's to 500,000 subscribers! Gods speed!
