I wish there was more berserker plot lines in the show. Ideally, like a full out interpration/explanation of how they get into that mode. From what I've seen, it may have included mushrooms of sort. That's just 1 guess though. Would have been a cool episode in the series.

They were but never of that size of heft, it wasn't about skill either it was a matter of space, speed and stamina. If you were this dude sure you could do some damage but you miss, you get stabbed, you've got soldiers left and right of you so good lucking swinging it too much. Real life warhammers and maces were small, they didn't need to be massive and the extra weight just doesn't give you anything to balance out the disadvantages. In a duel it's even worse. And even if you're THAT strong to swing it with any accuracy, half a dozen swings and you're shattered. They were small to apply maximum trauma to one area, you don't need a tonne of force to crack open a head, and if you're tall and strong, all the better. Sadly weapons like this, even scaled down a little just aren't practical, they're better on a battlefield than a duel but not compared to smaller maces or hammers. Hey at least long handled weapons could be used for effective and cool-factor (like a polehammer).

Depending how hard that viking is swinging that maul that soldier with the shield should of gotten a broken or spranged arm. It's been proven that depending on the shock force of the blunt weapon against a shield (regardless if it's wood, iron steel etc) the force from the weapon transferring into the shield would still be strong enough travel through the shield into the arm or hands of the wielder breaking or severally damaging the arm or hands. It was another reason why strong warriors favored blunt weapons like the maul cause it was able to get through defenses easily and allow them to go on a killing spree without having to slow down however the strength (it's weight) of the weapon is also its down side because once you miss with that weapon your left open for an attack unless you let go of your weapon and switch to hand to hand combat however doing so can also be a problem especially in a chaotic battle like in the video.

@@johnjerman3421 sorry but im not going to shut my brain off just because "it's a movie". If this was a fantasy world like lord of the rings then you would have a point since it's in a fantasy setting meaning the materials they use for armor and weapons might work differently from the real world. Sadly vikings is a tv series that follow the viking timeline of our history (though they merged and changed several things in the time line in order to make the show more interesting) which means it's got to have realistic battle situations other wise it comes off way too fake. It also ruins the suspense since now you know the character has plot armor and won't die because their body is more durable than normal. that's my opinion about this scene if you don't like it then please ignore it. Also vikings is a tv series not a movie.

Ight, so, all archeological evidence on the matter suggests that the Norsemen never had any sort of blunt weapons they used in battle, so already this is just straight up fiction, but also the blunt weapons that WERE used in history were always much, MUCH, smaller than that. Some had longer handles/poles but not a single mace, maul, flail, warhammer, ect. I can think of, or that I have ever heard of, was ever THAT big. Why? Because its balance would be so top heavy that even if you were strong enough to pick it up, and not many would be, it would be more like the weapon swinging YOU around whenever you tried to hit things with it, its momentum would drag you around the battlefield and leave you wide open with every attack. The sad part is the one upside you might think of, devastating attacks whenever they DO connect, isn't even very true, because a weapon like that would be so awkward and hard to control that even if your hit connects and even if it has good force behind it the weapons shape would be working against it and messing up your attacks angle and alignment with every swing. Essentially, to properly wield this weapon you would have to be like 300+ pounds of nearly pure muscle, to account for both strength and balance issues, and way more skilled than the weapons basic design would suggest, to make up for the weapons awkward shape that works against it at every move.

A lot of it is grounded in history, but with certain design choices, added drama, and alterations to details to make it a more entertaining show. @einarblood-axe9328

@MrJabloney Yes actually, that's exactly what the archeological evidence suggests when talking specifically about Scandinavian sea raiders and sea traders during the Viking Age, which is the only time and people that I was talking about. Based on what we can observe today, archeological findings, the Norsemen DID NOT use blunt weapons, of any kind, in battle. Maybe tomorrow there will be a finding that proves me wrong, but that isn't how facts work. Facts deal it what IS, not what COULD BE. There COULD have been a lone Viking that that decided a wooden mallet was the best weapon to take to battle when his axe or hunting spear was right around the corner. That Viking probably died on his first raid because wooden mallets are not optimised for combat and that wooden mallet probably either burned up with his corpse or disintegrated in the ground over the last thousand years. What Im saying, is that there is NO EVIDENCE that ANY VIKINGS used WOODEN MALLETS in battle. Do you disagree? If so, feel free to prove me wrong with links to some sort of evidence, I love learning new things about the Old Norse, but I think you'll find that Im not wrong. Lastly, let me set one thing straight, I was never talking about wooden mallets, I was talking about the maul in this scene that was very clearly made of metal. Obviously you don't have to be "300+ pounds of nearly pure muscle" to pick up and reliably swing a wooden mallet.

First, do you know anything at all about historical european martial arts, or HEMA? Do you know anything about medieval european arms, armor, or culture? Im far from an expert on these things myself, but I know a decent amount because they are subjects of great interest for me, and in history you don't just assume something was the case because its possible, or because the same people do it at a later time period. If there are no facts to back it, it is untrue until proven otherwise, that's how facts work. Second, I never once implied that this scene revolved around multiple hammer wielding Vikings, you are just dumb. Lastly, most tools and weapons are just named after different a languages version of the same word, like how "Zweihander" is the name for a German greatsword, but it just means "Two Hander" for example. Your little revelation is news to no one.
@einarblood-axe9328
4 жыл бұрын
@MrJabloney um, no, I didn't say the whole scene was fake, I said the weapon was. You CAN read, yes? Also, I never once said that one guy using a blunt weapon was impossible, what I said was that possibilty doesn't matter when it comes to historical fact. It is very possible, and indeed also probable and practical, that the Norsemen who wore mail also wore gambeson underneath, because it was common in that time, but we can NOT just say "oh they wore gambeson" because there is no EVIDENCE to support it. That does NOT, "basically" or otherwise, mean I think its impossible, that means that, in the eyes of history, it is wrong until proven right. The funny this is that I explained this already when talking about whether or not they might have used blunt weapons, yet you still doesn't seem to understand that I am not making the definitive statement that blunt weapons are an impossibility in the hands of Vikings, Im saying its currently unproven, which makes it incorrect, not impossible. Also, yes, I know what deductive reasoning is, the problem is that just because something makes sense, does not mean that it is true, humanity has proven time and time again that it does not have a universal idea of what does and does not make sense. It is just as likely that BECAUSE they have a god who uses a hammer they consider the weapon holy, and do not allow men to wield one in battle lest they be punished via sacrifice to the gods. Now, as far as we can tell with information we have on the matter, this isn't the case, and in the same vein we also know, at least for now, that the Vikings, for whatever reason, did not use blunt weapons, and until we find proof that they did, we can not just say "eh, Thor uses a hammer, that's a good enough reason for me to say that at least one Viking used a hammer in battle" Funnily enough, I actually WANT to be proven wrong on this one, because war hammers are bad ass, but just because I want it to be true that does not make it true. I have to wait for the facts like everyone else, because that's just the way it is. Also, Thor is the god of the average man, the warrior, the farmer, and the craftsmen, so it is actually likely that his "weapon" was not a weapon but a tool, a hammer used for smithing. Its just as likely that, because Germanic myth often sees the gods as ancestors, that Mjolnir is based on a boat axe, a weapon used by proto-germanic peoples with one blunt end like a hammer and one sharp end like an axe, which also happens to perfectly match the profile of Mjolnir. I cant say for sure if it is one or the other, or something else entirely, but that isn't for me to say, that is, at least until I have more facts to back me.
