I just realized training on sand gives better results than training on solid ground. Training on sand you always struggle for balance; constantly working your centre of gravity (abdominals). After training for a long time on sand when you transfer to solid ground you will undoubtedly perform better and suffer less from physical movements due to experience in more difficult conditions.

@@fieldy409 Quite the opposite, most vikings wore simple armor, or no armor at all. Even helms were rare in the early period. Jarls, huscarls and sort of important warriors sometimes wore chainmail, some plates around their shoulders or anything but a usual viking raider wasn't supplied well with armor. They didn't use swords much either. Actually, swords in that era were much rarer than this show portrays. Most vikins used axes and most british footsoilders were armed with spears.

@@mrsugar7528 It's very common misconception appearing in many movies that swords were hardened in water. 1- they weren't 2- you have to put the whole blade in liquid, other way it is going to crack ;)
@blackstag9366
2 жыл бұрын
@@jutub3662 That's not true actually, they were quenched in water. Quenching in water is only a problem with high carbon blades, however back in these Viking times, the Carbon % was quite low to begin with, so it wasn't that big of an issue. Also sometimes it's necessary to harden just parts of the blade. Meatier, structural parts of some weapons *cannot* be hardened, otherwise they will shatter on impact. Partially quenching allows that structural part to remain strong and springy, as opposed to hard and brittle. A bent blade can always be straightened, and shattered and cracked one is useless. What the OP is referring to when he says that the blacksmith permanently destroyed his blade, is that the smith quenched whilst the temperature was very low. That blade is either going to be soft as hell, have all sorts of stress fractures and delaminations, or come out warped.
@DeadlyVerge
2 жыл бұрын
@@blackstag9366 Typically, after all working is done, the entire blade of carbon steel is heated red hot and then quenched all at once, it's called annealing and makes sure that the hardness is equal throughout leaving no difference in grain structure which would cause a break. Afterwards the blade is tempered (softened) with careful heat treatment so that it will not shatter on impact. Annealing properly is the tricky part as blades can crack during the quench and if you drop it before tempering it will shatter.
