4 years has passed since the last episode, which makes this the year 800 A.D. We are introduced to Ragnar and Aslaug's sons Ubbe, and Hvitserk. The name *Ubbe* originates from the name 'Ülfr', which roughly meant "unfriendly wolf". The name *Hvitserk* meant "White shirt". In real life, 'Hvitserk' was only a nickname, and the son's real name was Halfdan, which meant "Half Danish". Aslaug tells Ragnar that she "sees things others can not" and Ragnar makes a reference to her being a vǫlva, a female seer. A bit of info about them: "In Norse society, a vǫlva was an elderly woman who had released herself from the strong family bonds that normally surrounded women in Norse clans. She travelled the land, usually followed by a retinue of young people, and she was summoned in times of crisis. She had immense authority and she charged well for her services. Scandinavian archaeologists have discovered *wands* in about 40 female graves, and they have usually been discovered in rich graves with valuable grave offerings which shows that the vǫlvas belonged to the highest level of society." "One example is a grave in Fyrkat, Denmark which turned out to be the richest grave in the area. She had been buried in a wagon from which the wheels had been removed. She had been plainly dressed in what was probably only a long dress. Around her toes, she had toe rings, which suggests that she was buried without shoes or only in sandals so that the rings showed." At the Swedish Museum of History there is a 82 centimeter (31 inches) long wand of iron on display, which belonged to a volva. Dressed in a bear pelt, she had received a ship burial with both human and animal sacrifice.

@Crazy Cletus Hey! Okay I will try to explain, I did some fact checking to make sure it's correct: Guthrum was not Ragnar Lothbrok's son, but a Danish Viking chieftain, later King, who fought with Ragnar's sons. Ragnar had so many sons, there was Fridlejf, Radbard, Dunvat, Sigurd, Bjørn, Agnar, Ivar, Erik, Halfdan (Hvitserk), Ubbe and Harald. I want to write so much more, but it is so hard to do without spoilers, if you know what I mean!

Based on what I’ve seen in the show, sleeping with other people or sharing the marital bed is pretty commonplace in their culture. The reason Lagertha left was because she was being asked to share her role as Ragnar’s wife. I don’t think she would have left if not for that, at least not as long as he had no more to do with Aslaug other than helping to raise their son.

@fheedpexx9267
5 жыл бұрын
Nah, Aslaug was her name. Kraka was what she used when she didn't want people to know her identitify as a famous princess. That was the name she would have used when introducing herself to the guys spying on her... and later told Ragnar her real name when she felt she could trust him. Kraki/Kraba are just alternative spellings of Kraka. Also she was the mother of ALL Ragnar's children. Lagertha wasn't a thing except in "Gesta Danorum" (I had never heard about her before this show). In Ragnar Lodbroke's Saga and others he was with a Thorunn before Aslaug, but she soon died and then he met Aslaug and started having kids.

You definitely shouldn't miss Einar Selvik's performance at the International TV Series Gala at the Krakow Film Festival in 2015. Search youtube for "FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris" - it is stunning. Einar is the singer for the group Wardruna as well as a solo artist, and did a lot of the background singing for VIkings. He even appears in one of the episodes (season4, episode 6).

Gaia Kay Spoilers. I haven’t read the books, but apparently they didn’t follow the source material as much in season 3. I’m still pissed about the death of Ragnar and Thyra because I’ve heard they don’t die that way in the books so it was done completely for shock value. Skade was also a horribly written character and was butchered compared to her book counterpart. I think Alfred was the one who kept everything together for me. I just don’t want the show to go downhill but I’m worried since Alfred is dead. He single handedly carried the show for me and it just will never be the same without him. I’ve read summaries for book 7 and 8 and there’s a ten year time jump which we should expect in season 4. However, I don’t think the show will follow it because then Uhtred would be too old. It would be cool to see the ten year time jump with all of Uhtred’s kids grown up but then again, I doubt the show will follow that path. Let’s just hope for a good season 4. I personally am not expecting it to be as good as season 2 but if it is, then man that’ll be awesome.

@fheedpexx9267
5 жыл бұрын
The south-western parts of Finland was basicly a continuation of Roslagen in Sweden back then :) Culturally they were pretty much the same. Those were the vikings who went east, towards Russia and Turkey. The Danes and Norwegians mainly went west. But it's kind of wrong to talk about Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark as if they existed back then. All there was were Swedes, Goths, Geats, Finns, Danes etc. The peoples/tribes who hundreds of years later would give their name to the respective countries. Countries weren't a concept that had reached Scandinavia at this point in time. Like in the show when it says "Västergötland, Sweden". The Geats (Götar) would have been pissed if they knew someone 1000 years later say "Sweden" about their territory. They were as little Swedish as Danes were Swedish. Swedes back then was pretty much just the area around modern day Stockholm, Roslagen, Birka, Uppsala etc.

They're right about Ecbert being like Ragnar. Ecbert, King of Wessex was a true-blue badass. He unified pretty much all of southern Britain by conquering Mercia, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and Dumnonia (all of which are kingdoms in pre-unification England). I won't go into what happened when his forces met Ragnar's. I'll just point out that they speak *English* in England, and not Danish (Ragnar's native language).

No worries. Don't fret, cos the å is exclusive to Scandinavia, so you wouldn't know it, really

the time jumps is so the series is able to get all Ragnar's and his sons' legends and the real events etc in the series within a decent viewing time to not drag it out. there is a lot of story to tell.

Your videos are a welcomed half hour of entertainment after days of work and stress. I know you both do other shows but I really wish you could find time to at least do 2 episodes together.

"Skål" / "Cheers", Steven you actually pronounced it perfectly! the word means "bowl" and refers to the bowl they all would drink from and share in celebration of a specific happening. The word is still said daily here in Scandinavia! 😍
