This looks like the place where you could really take a break from it all and just hang out for a couple of weeks, maybe even months. It seems that perfect balance between catering to travelers without it becoming a themepark. It seems extremely therapeutic to just chill here and catch up on some great books while staying in shape with the occational mountain walks.

I am impressed by the relatively large number of guest houses and cafe's. Are there really enough tourists to fill all those rooms and cafe's? You pointed out a few more under construction...might there be concern for overdevelopment, both in terms of less paying tourists per hotel/cafe and the environmental impact?
@adeadgirl13
11 ай бұрын
I'm a resident of Himachal Pradesh and there is a growing concern with overdevelopment. Not in terms of less paying tourists though, because as India develops and more and more Indians enter the middle class with disposable incomes, there's an unending demand for tourism spots. The popular spots during peak season are 100% full with people sleeping in their cars sometimes. The real concern is environmental which became evident this monsoon season with a lot of landslides and flooding and many people dying. Unchecked, badly-designed construction was responsbile for most of the destruction of life and property. The other big cause for landslides was the development of 4 lane highways to accomodate the ever growing number of tourists. And another concern was too many hydro electric power plants who all had to release their reservoirs because of excessive rain and that caused a lot of destruction downstream. So more people are talking about overdevelopment and that we shouldn't follow the model of our neighboring hill state of Uttrakhand where overdevelopment and over tourism caused to a lot of loss of life a few years back. But sadly, everyone ends up wanting to earn money and cash in on the tourism boom. We humans fail to consider what will happen if everyone did what we want to do.

I can understand the meaning of Indian place names from Sanskrit because they are very close to the Indo-European languages of Europe. For example, 'Himalaya' can be broken down into 'hima' (winter, zima) and 'laya' (to lay, lezec), while 'Himachal' consists of 'hima' (winter, zima) and 'chal' (mountain, kalns), thus meaning is winter mountain.

Difficult to escape the mixed feelings about development owing to the rather staggering replacement of the traditional houses with pretty and quaint wood-based architecture by the ongoing larger concrete and metal constructions seemingly fueled by tourism. The new structures have much higher carbon footprint and are much heavier, possibly making the slopes more landslide-prone during the rains.
