"In the Navy" is my favorite of theirs. Even though people dismiss them, their songs are really good.

Village People started the Gay Revolution Movement in the music industry. Good on them for who they were and the times they were in 🌈💖💯...

PancakeMarshmallowDude, fun memory to share with this. In the early 90's I was a server at a 24hr restaurant & one weekend night after a particularly crazy busy "bar rush" I was in the back of the kitchen clearing dishes when this song came on the radio. When I heard "extra" singing, I looked up & saw my 50-something manager wailing the tune AND doing the YMCA dance moves! Imagine my surprise, so I joined in the fun & next thing you know the rest of the crew came back to finish up the song with us. It totally lifted everyone's mood & is a moment I will never forget. It crossed gender, age, race, economic background, etc. Just an example of the joy & power of music, IMHO! Thanks to anyone taking a moment to read this. 😁😁😁

Just rememember, 'PRIDE SATURDAYS' ain't over until you do --- BRAND NEW LOVER -- by Dead or Alive. Full gay cowboy camp with an ultra fabulous beat !! ...... Also -- GO WEST -- by Pet Shop Boys could NOT be any more GAY !!! .... tight white tank tops with pink triangles and even tighter pants !! ... BTW: The Y as we used to called it back then was one of several places gay men went to cruise thus, "You can hang out with all the boys" line on song. I met my ex at the Y in San Francisco .... LOL ..!

Fun song! :-) Have you reacted to (or heard) the song "Macho Man" by the Village People before, the title track from their second album, in 1978? That was their first Top 40 song ... and it is really "gay" too! :-) ... That same album also had a track called "I Am What I Am" (a totally different song than the gay anthem "I Am What I Am" from the 1983 Broadway musical "La Cage Aux Folles," which is about a gay couple who run a nightclub that features drag entertainment). Village People lyrics (1978): People have the right to live with who they please / People have the right to live there happily / No one has the right to choose my love for me / I was born free / I did not choose the way I am / I said I am what I am. "La Cage Aux Folles" lyrics (1983): I am what I am / I am my own special creation / So come take a look / Give me the hook or the ovation / It's my world that I want to take a little pride in / My world, and it's not a place I have to hide in / Life's not worth a damn 'til you can say / "Hey world, I am what I am."

It's so weird to me that you wouldn't know what a YMCA is, but I guess they're not as prominent anymore as they used to be. Though this song has mild gay innuendo, YMCAs were not gay institutions. In fact, some people I know never picked up on the gay hints in this song and thought it was just a wholesome disco homage to the good work that YMCAs do. This song was extremely popular in 1978. Cheerleaders, including in my school, would do routines to it, almost all of them including arm gestures indicating the letters YMCA, something people also did on disco dance floors to the song at the time. A massive hit for everyone, not just played in gay clubs but everywhere.

In the video for 1Ds Best Song Ever, at the beginning they are looking at all the different images for the band, Village People are one of them, I think Harry is the Red Indian, remember this coming out(no pun intended) it was played every where, you couldn't get on a dance floor for people doing the dance to it :)

I don't know how this wasn't first off the rank. Used to be a great song to rollerskate to. That said, I don't think I ever noticed that they don't do the 'YMCA' hand/arm gestures in the actual film clip. Must have come later.

Reactors only seem to do this song. This whole album was A M A Z I N G. "Hot Cop" "My Roommate" "Ups N Downs" the Medly "The Women / I'm a Cruiser". OMG I played this album over and over and over again. "Macho Man" from another album is great too. I didn't associate with them as "Gay" when I was a kid, for some reason. (Naive lol). I wish I had, since I am a gay male, myself. You're a great reactor. I'm glad I found you
