#Bharananganam is a Christian pilgrimage center located in South India on the banks of the Meenachil River, situated 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from Pala and Plassanal in the Kottayam district of Kerala. The primary occupation of the residents is agriculture, with a focus on cultivating cash crops such as rubber.
The area was once considered an independent territory under the Travancore Kingdom, directly governed by the vassal Kingdom of Poonjar. It is believed that the original church in the area, dedicated to Veluthachan, a legendary figure, was burned down in the 11th century. A new church was then constructed on the opposite bank of the Meenachil River. Due to some confusion over whether the new church should be built on the north or south bank of the river, it became known as 'Anakallitt palli,' which refers to an elephant lying down at the site. Bharananganam is also believed to be the birthplace of Kulapurath Bhima, a legendary Brahmin from the Kulapurath family, who is credited with building a fort in Poonjar.
