Carouge is a Swiss city and commune in the canton of Geneva The canton of Geneva (French: canton de Genève, German: Kanton Genf, Italian: Cantone di Ginevra, Romansh: Chantun Genevra) is the westernmost canton of all those form Switzerland. It basically consists of the city of Geneva and a small enclave on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the heart of the canton of Vaud. It was proclaimed the independent Republic of Geneva by John Calvin from 1541 until it became a canton of the Helvetic Confederation on December 31, 1815. It was the penultimate canton to join, since the last was the Republic and Canton of Jura in 1979.
