Oof. I broke my jaw in seven places (three maxillar, two mandibular, and both TMJs shattered) in a rock climbing accident (along with a host of other injuries, but we're talking about jaws here). When I saw you posted a video about 1) hockey and 2) jaws, I was like "oh boy, he's got a long road ahead of him". I had thirteen screws and two plates in my jaw for six weeks, plus months of relerning how to chew, and "all" that happened to me was falling 20' onto my face and I only weigh 115lbs. I can't imagine a rock being hurled at my jaw by a pro athlete at 120mph. I also thoroughly appreciate how you mentioned concussions can still happen from something like this. I've had cousins and friends get hit in the face with hockey pucks and have concussions, but because they don't hit their head like in football or car wrecks, it goes unnoticed. I myself have a TBI from my accident.

Hardest shots are definitely over 101 mph... One timers are harder than regular slapshots. Also there are definitely some non allstar players who could definitely challenge the hardest shot record.

The fastest recorded shot was 108.8 in an all star comp on a stationary puck.. players can rip a one timer harder, plus there are a lot more players than just the ones at the all star comp

Also, would you be able to touch on Patrice Bergeron playing with a punctured lung a few years back, and it's implications on his long-term health?

Can you offer any insight? Thanks!

@@BrianSuttererMD The hardest recorded shot in NHL history is 108.8 mph, and that is in a non game situation in which players are not being rushed or defended in any way. Just letting it rip as hard as humanly possible. In game, shots will rarely come anywhere close to this. It's not impossible but it's not the norm, and it's never 120mph. So, if your text book tells you the puck is ever traveling at 120mph, I would consider looking for a new text book in which the authors bothered to do the proper amount of research neccessary to the topic. If that is wrong, what else in there might be wrong? To add to this, the average speed of a properly executed NHL slap shot during play is between 85-93mph.
