Well, it's also symbolic of Michael and Kay's relationship. Kay hated Michael for what he has become but he always insisted that he did all that to protect her and the children. Michael didn't want his daughter, Mary, to suffer like Kay and hence, broke her up with Vincent. This led to her being away from Vincent's protection unlike Kay who was always in Michael's protective sphere.

I've been wondering the same too. She's a good actress. I think the hatred that she received is a sign of racism. Those haters wanted a more Caucasian looking actress to play Mary. Very unpopular opinion here: Sofia Coppola did a good job. She played a credible, innocent looking italian girl. In the movie, she does not only have Italian in her looks, but also in the way she moves, in a way which I find hard to put into words. I'll admit that in some scenes you can tell that she is an amateur, but she has good chemistry with Andy Garcia and contributes positively to the movie. The Godfather III movie was a excellent movie, but many people don't get this just because it was substantially different from the first two GF movies... Peace!

Sofia Coppola in this movie was fantastic. Wherever her lack of professionalism shines through, it only adds to the character of the young girl stepping into adulthood with all the uncertainties, which she was supposed to play. That physically she is the incarnation of italianità of the Southern type can hardly be a point of criticism given that she was playing the daughter of a Sicilian family, can it ? My special disdain is directed towards all the film critics who felt compelled to rate her performance excessively negative just to demonstrate that they are way too smart to be deceived by Francis Coppola. In reality these critics were deceived by their stereotype, that family members of movie directors by definition cannot be good actors.
@gee2541

Critics did not scrutinize her acting because they were blinded by a stereotype that children of directors cannot be good actors lol there are many talented actors who have benefited from nepotism and family ties. Sofia simply wasn’t meant to be an actress and it was apparent in her performance. She clearly found her true passion and skill-set in directing and has been praised for it.

My understanding is that this scene depicts Michael's relationship with Kay. Michael always insisted that he did everything to protect Kay and his children. Mary would have been safe with Vincent, maybe unhappy and terrible like Kay, but still safe...

Michael didn't love Kay not in my opinion anyway he didn't treat her respectfully and that is Kays daughter got killed too not just his she was almost killed before too because of the type "family" they are and Michael was the reason Apolonia was killed maybe he would have loved her being more traditional and submissive than Kay anyway tragic.
