The Kroffts were also involved in "PINK LADY {& JEFF}". Fred Silverman, as president of NBC in 1980, was determined to create another variety show along the lines of "DONNY & MARIE" and "TONY ORLANDO & DAWN" [never mind that Mie and Kei could barely speak a word of English]. One of his executives tried to tell him, "The variety show is dead." Silverman roared, "I'll tell you *exactly* how long the variety show is dead for!!!" "How long?", the executive said softly. "It's dead until the next hit variety show is on the air!!!", Fred insisted. Except for "BARBARA MANDRELL & THE MANDRELL SISTERS" (also a Krofft production), Silverman- in his three years with NBC- could never keep a variety show alive for more than a few episodes.

@@fromthesidelines Silverman almost bankrupted NBC with Supertrain. The costs for it were high and the ratings dismal. Supposedly he went to visit the set one time and got so mad that he kicked the scale model of the train. Not realizing that it was a harder material than he thought it was and broke his foot. I remember Johnny Carson used to make fun of Supertrain in his monologue. That must have drove Silverman up the wall, but he couldn't do anything about it because at that point in time, The Tonight Show was about the only thing on NBC that was making money and Johnny was also thinking about going to ABC himself. It's amazing how someone who created such success at both CBS and ABC almost singlehandedly destroyed. NBC.

Yes, it was a low point for 70s television, but there was an older audience for this kind of slop, which is why there were so many variety shows around at the time. You had Lawrence Welk, Donny and Marie, Sonny and Cher, and quite a few more. All aimed at a target audience of at least 70 years old. Grandpa and grandma would watch one of these trainwrecks, and then go to sleep. It was the highlight of an otherwise uneventful day. On the bright side, at least Robert Reed had fun with his delusion that he deserved to be on Broadway.

Lawrence Welk was not a variety show. Variety shows were actually an evolution of vaudeville and were around since the beginning of TV. Not all were bad and Carol Burnett was the gold standard. However, toward the end of their run they were overused and it seemed that just about anybody who came on the scene with a hit record also got a variety show. If you compare this show to any other variety show of the era you will see it pretty much follows the same formula. In terms of song and dance, comedy, guest stars and solo numbers.. Just insert a different person or group to theme the show around.

There couldn't have been much done to save this train wreck. I'd have asked Flo to do the variety show herself and invite Brady kids on as guest stars. You can even have Geri play her daughter on the new show, even do a Seinfeld thing, where she goes back to the Brady family as her "real life" family for some skits and has her "TV" family variety show with just Geri and maybe a couple other people that are more talented singers/dancers than the rest of the kids were. Marcia and Greg's singing was pretty dreadful, and you can sort of tell Maureen M. is really struggling around this time.

Maureen McCormick was in the middle of her cocaine addiction while filming the variety specials.

@@curtgottler9961 It's possible we both have the same great-great grandfather, he had like ten kids, he moved us here from Bavaria.

@@curtgottler9961 Actually the poster was right in that Florence and fake Jan were the only ones that could actually carry this kind of format. The others were horrible at this.
