How adorable! Lucy and Desi in a Ford commercial! This was when the craftmanship was solid and the makers stood behind their products-didn't need 'warranties' back then!!

My family did not have the convertible but we had a 1957 Ford like this one. Forgot which engine package but it was huge, drank gas like a sinkhole. It did have the "Wonderbar"radio, two motorized buttons for "Town and Country" that would power tune the great sounding mono TUBE radio. On family vacations dad would drive all night, I slept in the rear floor, older sister slept in the back seat. Dad passed EVERYTHING on the road. That Fairlane would stroll at 95 mph all night. When we got rid of it 2 owners later we received a visit from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation...they were tracing the title of the car, it had been found abandoned with a giant moonshine tank replacing the back seat and part of the trunk....

These cars were not "prone to failure". The mechanisms did have problems when the nut behind the wheel did not follow operating instructions, like stopping the action mid-way between up or down. These are very reliable, well engineered cars especially for 1957.

awesome idea, although i know now why they were so prone to failure. here's what the top alone required to operate: 10 power relays 10 limit switches 4 lock motors 3 drive motors 8 circuit breakers 610 feet of electrical wire.

Throughout history new machines were always prone to breakage or failure. Look at the first jet made by the Germans at the end of WWII, many of them weren't shot down, their engines failed but the reason being they were rushing brand new technology.
