I remember attending an audio show at hotel Delta in 1982 in Montreal, the demo of holographic effect was astounding, speakers were Magnat's, i heard two songs, one was classic and i could "see" the musician position so precisely, the other was Aldo Nova's Fantasy, i freaking looked at the ceiling when the helicopter section played. That happened more than 40 years ago, and i'll never forget it.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience- that's what makes this channel more fun for me. My 1st holographic experience, & I think I may have mentioned it on an early episode, was listening to the demo 'record' that came in an issue of AUDIO, which would have been listened to on my LaScala's, which would not present as good an image as the Magnat's most likely, but you never forget certain audio experiences.

@@vintageaudioreview If memory serves correctly ... I sold this Carver Pre Amp & (2 ) Phase Linear D500 Amps to a guy from MPL. MN ... Latter the same guy brought from me... (1) TFM 75 Amp ... (2) PM 1.5 Amps....(1) Heath Kit 200 WPC Amp... I handle Equipment , Is why i sold them...Always loved Bob Carver Equipment ... Myself they seem to work very well with Bose 901's .... Still today i sell equipment ...Thanks for asking me '' Vintageaudioreview '' ...Happy Holidays ! .. I just happen to land on your review... Glad i did !

@@Ds-xi2sq That makes sense. Had a chance to pick up some Black 901's series 6- mint, but just have too many speakers right now and am auditioning another pair, which will be measured and reviewed. You sound like my buddy Ian (Episode #5).

@@vintageaudioreview Thanks for your time and reply , so...Well , my gosh you made a statement about Episode #5...So i went and peeked ... Ian has a nice system , does this ever as i'm typing sure brings back some memories...You know i still have a dbx 3 and back in the day , really about everyone i knew that was serious about there set up had one ... Thinking back to the 70's & 80's that was such a great treat to see and hear everything that was going on in the industry back then ... Today i don't as much dabble in the ''way high end pieces ''... Thats a little too far out of the normal range in pricing ... And my investment in gear , i'm a little more selective now, but i expanded a lot in the home theater area . Ian if you read this, brother you have a very sweet kick a - - system. Well done !

@@Ds-xi2sq Thanks for checking out that episode with Ian. He is thinning the heard a bit now that he picked up some Wilson Sasha's. I had a 3bx up until about 6 months ago- it cut out and I was never ever to fix it so i sold it for parts on ebay. Ian has a 4bx I believe, which would be what I would go for- yeah, saw one in college in the late 70's and had to have one. I am lucky in that another one of my friends has some high end gear that he will let me test. Stay tuned!

This was the HjFi Rose of today. I sold these at Tech HiFi back in the early 80's. The build quality was better than 90% of everything else we sold. The hyped "digital sound field processors", "magnetic suspension circuitry" and "natural holographic transistors" sent many down the road of multiple amplifiers, spliters, EQ's and speaker pairs all controlled by a CPU that couldn't tie it's shoes. (you see that output on the back? some Yamahas had 8 pair) In the end, it was like a psychotic monkey on PCP putting together a Home Theater system before Home Theater existed, trying to sound better than a stereo 2 channel but couldn't. If they had just stuck with simple high quality preamp, the same customer would have bought them and maybe we'd want to keep one today. Alas, not. Just like HiFi Rose. 🔈🔉🔊

Am not familiar with Tech HiFi, but sounds like a "Custom HiFi" that was here in AZ in the late 70's. Just sold a Yamaha DSP1 and matching amp, but only had 4 pairs of outputs. The predecessor to the 4000t actually had some small surround amps in it. Guess it would have been a salesman dream when one was purchased.

My C4000 has lost amplitude equally on both output channels. It's less than 50% of new amplitude. Any suggestions?

Looking at the block diagram, there are several places what you are describing could happen. You would need a scope and signal generator as well as the service manual to step through the signal path and see where the amplitude drops off more than it should- can't really help for than that. I would look up Nelion Audio and see what they charge to refurbish it.

@@vintageaudioreview Thanks. I was able to scrounge up a schematic for the C4000. Actually fairly few of the blocks will cause a balanced LEFT & RIGHT volume change. I'm suspecting a power supply issue. I'll dig into it with meter, signal generator, and oscilloscope. I was "fishing" for a point of frequent failure, to keep my guesswork to a minimum. Guess I'll start at the non-phono (high-level) circuits where common levels would be equally affected. Finding the service manual on-line gives me SOME confidence.

@@Tool-Meister The power supply is the first and easiest place to start, though I remember it was kinda a pain in the butt to take apart. I did not look at the schematic just the block diagram, bit I'm guessing the signal for both the left and right channel could feed an amp (or IC of some sort) somewhere in that path as there is a lot of potential signal processing- not sure how much is by switches or circuits...You should try a search on TheCarversite.com forums if you have not already-good luck and let me know what the problem was.

UPDATE: I secured a capacitor replacement kit on eBay. My C-4000 was new in 1982, making it 40 years old. I’m confident a significant percent of the C-4000’s caps being leaky and/or no longer performing as designed. I’m betting after caps replacement is done the C-4000 will be vastly improved!

@@Tool-Meister Thanks for the follow-up and good luck with the cap replacement. For the most part from what I have seen, Carver may have skimped a bit on the quality of the caps they selected. Being >40years old does mean the caps are going to be bad and need replacement- at one time I will do a video relating to that topic. Hopefully the caps are your problem- did you have a lot of hum when listening to your preamp?

Thanks for the comment! I thought by saying it was a pain that would be good enough. I think I expressed some more frustration on the Carver M400a video. I will be sure to bring more emotion to those kind of repairs when they happen. I have turned down several repairs that are too involved for what I care to spend my time on- might be fun to do a video on one of those when it happens...

@@jameswarren1831 Thanks again for the suggestion. I probably don't do more on the repair part other than maybe show where the bad part was on the board and or schematic- I don't think I need to show my soldering or unsoldering or removing screws just because I try to keep my video as short as I can. Also, I don't have a camera person to shoot the video to get the detail needed- I hope to get a better camera before too long that can focus better so that may help. I have a Marantz Model 22 that needs some repair that I will start within the week and will make it a point to bring a bit more "emotion" into the video as I can :)
