Thanks for posting the videos you do. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve referred to them working on my 46 DeSoto. Keep up the good work!

All my problems on my '70 Volkswagen Beetle are self induced. Combination of my own ignorance, haste, lack of the right tool or parts, or money. Totally worth it though. So satisfying when you are able to diagnose a problem, learn from it, and enjoy the results. Love your content.

The thing I always forget is the rotor on the distributer. The amount of times I'll check the points, put the cap on, and try to start it with no rotor, you'd think I'd get over it! Glad to see there wasn't any damage. I'm having a bit of an overheating problem in my '53 Chrysler, I'll have to double-check the thermostat.

I think we've all been there with the rotor incident. I know I have too!...More than once. Lol.

Hello from NZ , I fitted a alloy radiator in my 48 power wagon and will probably do that to my 41 wc12 . They are amazing , so efficient in losing heat.

I am looking at alloy rads, and sizing. Doing my research. I know my larger displacement engine is making more HP and torque at 237 ci versus the original 226 ci engine. More HP means more heat that need to disperse. A rad is in my future.

In the old cars we would run a 165 thermostat in summer.

If the 165 stat doesn't solve problems sometimes head gasket holes don't line up, water tube in block is clogged, or impellers on water pump worn out. Test by disconnecting heater hose and see that it sprays water in a strong flow . Of course you're using 50% antifreeze.

Thanks for the ideas John. I have considered all points you mentioned. I have performed testing and troubleshooting of various cooling system components. I am fairly confident that the non-stock rad is undersized and unable to cool adequately. There are a few more band aides that could be tried to delay the rad upgrade purchase. I’m 96% sure a larger rad is inevitable.

Keith, working on these old survivors is a challenge at times and then, enters self-induced. It all a fun mountain to climb. Thanks for sharing these tidbits, I’ll keep then stored for when it’s time to scramble for reasons.

Hi Keith, not sure if u read comments. I inherited a '49 plymouth special delux convertable. It came with the head off and an edmunds customs aluminum head sitting on the block (long story). I put the original head back on and got it running well enough to put it on a trailer and take it home. The engine has an internal thermostat bypass and the aluminum head is designed for external bypass. Do you know if I can convert the engine to external bypass like the one in your video so I can use that really cool piece of vintage performance history?

Yes you should be able to use the non-bypass head. Be sure to order the proper head gasket for the non-by pass head. You will need a different thermostat housing, and the little by-bass fitting at the top of the water pump. It will bolt on. While you are in there if you do not know the age of the water pump, you may want to replace it.

@@keithsgarage5831 thanks for the reply! The internal bypass has a port in the block that runs from the head, down about an inch give or take and takes a 90 into the back of the water pump. Is there a different water pump plate or should I fill this port with cement or something? Noted on the water pump, thanks!
