I miss the sound of old window ACs it gives me a certain sense of comfort and lulls me to sleep. The one I’m using now is a Hitachi ra-10hv inverter window type air conditioner which has a completely sealed indoor/outdoor ducting system which is very well insulated and twin dc fan motors so airflow is independently controlled indoor/outdoor. It’s also really unique looking outside since the oversized condenser is split into two and placed at either sides and the fan is situated at the back so unlike typical window ACs you only see the fan at the back. Honestly couldn’t sleep the first few days because it’s so quiet. as quiet as a split type unit. It makes weird noises when you first turn it on and when it does self diagnosis and calibrates/resets the electronic expansion valve which is interesting. I like how I can hear the very faint hum of the condenser fan when the compressor is off the gentle hum stops after 30 secs or so when the compressor and inverter has cooled down. Nevertheless, the nostalgia induced by older air conditioners will always be special to me.

@JordanU
5 жыл бұрын
@@jdsnaps3167 Sorry for the late reply, I'm just seeing this now.. The unit should be serviced yearly; remove from the wall and thoroughly clean the coils and lubricate the motor.. The coils can be cleaned by spraying on a foaming coil cleaner; condenser cleaner on the outdoor side and evaporator cleaner on the inside coil.. I have recently recorded a video on cleaning another air conditioner's coils, it's a different model than this one but same procedure.. The fan motor has 2 oil ports on the top, one on each end above where the shaft comes out.. They are covered by a small round plug.. Remove the plug and slowly put in 10-15 drops of lightweight non-detergent oil such as ZoomSpout or 3-in-1 oil in the BLUE can (not the red/black one) in each port.. You'll also want to drill a few holes in the basin of the unit where the water pools on the outside, these units are prone to rusting and the water accumulation will decrease their lifespan. If you're not comfortable doing the work yourself it's worth bringing someone in for service, if maintained these last for many many years and will cool far better than the units made today..

Thanks for sharing this Jordan. My parents purchased this unit new in the 1980's I believe. It was a fantastic unit! Unfortunately it sprang a leak in the cooling system (according to two different repair companies) a couple of years ago. It did work fantastic & we treated well. Do you recommend a unit to replace this one? I live in Northern VA, near Washington, DC where there's high humidity!
@JordanU

A leak in something like this is not inconceivable, but it's super rare. Do you hear the compressor running still during operation? I truly cannot recommend a modern replacement, there is not a single air conditioner made today that will come anywhere near this one in terms of quality, longevity, and performance. I personally would find and repair the leak. If you don't know how or don't want to pay someone to do so, find another vintage unit off Craigslist or the like. Give it a good cleaning, drill a hole in the base pan towards the back to let the water out, and clean the coils one or twice a year. With proper maintenance, machines made in the 90s and earlier will run for decades on end. If you buy a new unit from the store, you'll be replacing it again well within the decade.

This A/C unit should be from about the late '80's or early '90's. I'm guessing circa 1988, 1989, 1990, or 1991. The Taconic Hall building at the DCC community college in Poughkeepsie, NY has some of these old carrier units. They still run and work to this day. Back in the fall last year, I heard them running. I love mine -- it keeps the whole floor cool when it's 100 degrees out. However, it has started leaking water into the house. I'm going to see about opening it up to clear out the drain into the back. Some gunk has probably built up over the years.
@JordanU
3 жыл бұрын
There's a small opening I believe on the bottom left side of the evaporator chamber (perspective facing the front of the unit) where it opens to the outside and the water flows through. The condensation often turns into a sludge after so many years and clogs the drain. While you have it out, use a garden hose and flush out the rear coil. Make sure you can see light through it. I also like to drill a hole in the outside pan to let the water drip out. By design it pools near the outside coil, but that just inhibits rust and mold. These are excellent machines, you can't get units that perform like this and last as long anymore. Even if you have to hire a tech to clean it out, it's well worth the money over buying a new one. New ones don't last more than 5 or 10 years, these last decades on end.

This unit has worked great, but I will admit, I have never had it serviced. I googled Carrier International today (and found your video) because this morning the timer motor (which we never use) started humming. Anyway, I was just excited to see your video, and while replacing the unit with something newer had crossed my mind, I am now motivated to have a technician come and service it. My question to you is - would you recommend I simply contact the closest Carrier service tech in my area for this? Or should I look to a different type of company? Or, when might you be coming to So Cal? :-) Thanks again for the video.

But my guess would be you're better off going with a reputable third-party technician.. I doubt Carrier trains their employees on units this old anymore, and you never really know what you'll get when you request service from a big company.. Either way it's definitely worth getting it serviced,, this thing will cool better and outlast anything on the market today, especially if it's cleaned and lubricated regularly.. Thank you for this video. I have this same window air conditioning unit which came with my home. Do you happen to know what filter I should buy for it. I do not know the model number and it does not have a filter inside. I would be most grateful if you could tell me what I should use.

You'll need something like this: www.amazon.com/Duck-Replacement-Conditioner-24-Inch-1285234/dp/B002GKC2US/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526422485&sr=8-1&keywords=air+conditioner+filter+foam Measure the coil on the air conditioner and find a filter that meets those dimensions.. If one is not available (which it may not be given the age of this unit), buy a larger size and cut it to fit..

My indicator light started flickering, what does that mean? It's still blowing cold air.
@JordanU
5 жыл бұрын
That kind of indicator light will flicker when it reaches the end of its lifespan, it may be like that for years or it could go out tomorrow.. It’s nothing to worry about.. You can get a replacement bulb or just go without it, the machine will continue to run regardless of the light.. It’s no indicator that the unit itself is nearing the end of its lifespan.. These were very good quality units; with proper maintenance they will keep going for many years into the future.. Today’s market of air conditioners simply doesn’t consist of models that cool as well and last as long as these..

What happens if starts leaking water out of the front? Ours still works but having trouble unclogging it.
@JordanU
6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes water can leak out the front if the unit is leaning forwards.. The unit should sit level in its installation.. Do you see any water accumulating in the rear or middle of the outdoor portion of the unit? It could also be that the canal where the water flows from the evaporator chamber is clogged..

@JordanU

@@giancarlointrabartolo8025 The button with the arrow facing out of the house will open the exhaust 'vent'. The button with the arrow facing into the house will open the intake 'vent'. Neither of these features move anywhere near enough air to be worth using and the unit will produce the most cooling with them closed.

That is one of the most foolish suggestions I've ever heard.. Not only do I consider 300 dollars nowhere near 'super cheap', it makes absolutely no sense to replace a reliable, working piece of equipment with something of inferior quality that won't perform as well or last as long..
