I can tell you these things are better than most CD players made nowadays. With new op amps they can be extremely transparent.

These are very easy to add a valve output stage to. Same boards used in many different manufacturers. TDA1541 is a great DAC. The empty space was for separate audio board options.

I have a CD 471. Can a valve output stage be added easily to this model as well? Do you know anyone in the UK who could do this for me?

Well worth taking the white circular centre clamp off the black plastic top arm, be careful there is a ball bearing which may fall out. Clean and lubricate ball and cup that it sits in. It will track better afterwards.

1:45 The bottom and top of this case was used for many models of Philips/Magnavox/Marantz etc. CD players around 1987-1988 (possibly longer). I have a CD player that's completely different from this one on the front side, but the cover and bottom and possibly the electronics on the inside are identical. In the service manual, you can read that the holes on the left of the back side are for models in different parts of the world that need a voltage changer and a fuse on the outside. The small circuit board on the inside is because the same circuit board was also used in 36cm wide players. 5:23 My CD player has an extra board above the rest of the electronics, which has a variable-level output stage with two RCA/cinch connectors in the holes that you point out there. You can use the remote control to make it go louder or quieter, in case you have it connected to a stereo system without remote control.

Yes, here in Brazil these holes are used for the voltage selector and fuse holder.

Franchement , j'adore ce genre d’unités optique . Avec un bloque optique sans engrenage , c’était un type de construction vraiment élégant a mon humble avis .

I expected to see a more solid looking CD mechanism in there after looking at the outside of the case. I think they routed the head phone wire that way to keep it away from the mains voltages for extra safety.
