Before you go into major engine work I would first make sure you have oil flow to rocker boxes. If so then performing a leak down test coupled with manual compression test will indicate a weak cylinder. Dont go for the rebuild off the bat unless its F***ed.

Great video man. I am a believer in Ironheads myself. I bought a non running 73 a few years back. After getting it running at the guy’s place I opted to ride it the 300 miles home with my buddy in the truck following. I grinned the whole way. These bikes are reliable if you don’t mind doing a few basic maintenance jobs.

Got a,1975 ironhead. Had a new s&s stroker kit in it, andrew pb+ cams, super e carb...the whole 9! Fast bike, but rod bearings failed! Took the entire motor apart, looked like silver pixie dust all in the motor. Sold all the s&s stroker parts, went back to all stock with low compression cast pistons 8.5:1. Guarantee it will be reliable! Once you start hot rodding those bikes, your asking for major headaches! Keep them stock, get a cycle electric dgv 5000 genny, a miku i vm 38 or cv carb and adjustments as needed and an ironhead will be rock reliable! A old biker has 183,000 miles on a original bone stock 1973 ironhead!!! Never had to do any work to the bottom end either! A miracle, maybe....or just knows what to do and when to do it!

Got a '76 Ironhead... runs like a champ. Installed an electric starter last yr... my leg was getting tired of kickin it after 45 yrs of owning it. Yep... bought it NEW in '76! Still kick it to get it going when it's cold. Usually starts on the first kick after I give it a full choke key off prime kick. Problem I would have is when I'd pull in to a gas station and shut it off if it didn't fire on the first kick it usually coughed the gas death cloud and flooded. At that point you were looking at 5-10 minutes of kicking with the gas and key off to try and clear it. Now with the electric starter if it does that I just hit the starter and it eventually fires again! (edit) wanted to say I learned how to get the carb off without taking the tank and all that stuff off the left side... The bottom nut come off from below the carb with a wrench going between the pushrods... the top nut you use a crows foot on the end of a socket wrench...

Been working on ironheads off & on almost since that bike was new...None of us older "Harley guys" are(or should be) laughing at y'all.(at least not anything on THIS vid...:-) ...) Proper troubleshooting & got it running much quicker than most of us would....Year earlier = right foot shifter left foot rear brake!...:-) ...Good to find one THAT OEM that seems to just needs a bit of freshening up(Eagle/banner sticker/decal on upper left tank is from '76 IIRC)...All aspects of front brake rebuild are simple tasks for a man of your talent... Hope to see more of this machine & it's progress in future vids

All right Derek you have to understand that you have to add at least 15 minutes to every hour you say because we call that BS time. So you didn't do all that bad after all. I put a single fire ignition on a 79 Harley one time and it was like a two-day project but I got it right and of course it's sprung a leaked oil was going everywhere and you know that was another half a day. It's just the way it was. The new Evo has changed everything. I've got a 99 Buell M2 that I still love. Thanks for all the content my friend thank you Shelby.

What do old Harleys and hound dogs have in common? 1) Their bark is worse than their bite. 2) They always mark their spot. 3) They love to ride in pick up trucks. 4) The older they get, the more time they spend on the porch. I've ridden a 72' XLCH since 1996 and love it, but I recently got a 2000 Heritage and that new fangled electric leg is starting to spoil me. Just turn on the key, push a button and go man go. No primer kicks or nothin. What will they think of next.

75 was the first year of right hand shifter. Gov regulations made it so manufacturers had to comply. AMF just made a long armature that went through the frame where the rear brake lever was the year before. It was a bandaid to be in compliance. This configuration only lasted 75 and 76 until they redesigned the cases to accommodate the shfter shaft to come out on the right. That big lanky shifter was terrible. I had mine separate at the weld seam and start dragging on the road in the middle of a long ride.
