Great work, your copper tape trick is something I've never seen before. Those pots would have been endangered around me. Those two speakers are so different, from the woofer frames, one having the paper wrap, and even the wood of the cabinets seems different. Could have just been built on different days I suppose. So long as they sound matched no matter. Interesting they took the time and expense of putting in nuts to retain the woofers, have that clean (simple!) crossover and wiring, but then when sealing them made such a mess. So much cleaner now. Speaking of mess, my first surround "repair" was to coat the crumbling foam surround of an old speaker with a layer of silicone. Sure it worked, but that Permatex sound isn't so good. Thanks for leaving your mistake in to warn others. A thought for future videos: I found myself looking at the paper on the back and trying to read what's on the pots/what they tuned. A quick external tour to introduce the features like you did with the damage could be beneficial with classics like these. Rock on!

To me it looks like you went a little heavy on that surround sealant.

Possibly. Hard for me to tell without much to go on. I didn't have similar pictures of what it looks like when done right. The speakers sound pretty good, though!

I have two AR-4x that I purchased when I was in Vietnam 1966 and had them drop shipped to my parents. The potentiometer has gone bad in both my AR-4x's. Where does one find the correct potentiometer for these speakers. BTW they both suffer from detatched surrounds. I have some adhesive on the way to fix this. They aren't torn just detatched from the back of the cone. Thanks for any help in finding the pots.

People use L-pads now. Do a search for acoustic research speakers site:audiokarma.org

Hi I just picked up ar model 142, but they don’t seem to work on my tecnics system, they just go whoop and that’s it, any information appreciated 👍

Whoop? Not sure what that's supposed to mean. And 90's AR is very different from 60's and 70's. I've rehabbed some 80's AR's. Still, I couldn't tell you anything without a lot more information.

Hi, yes I bought second hand pair 142 extremely cheap, I don’t know anything about them, I have a tecnics system, so I wired up one speaker which worked for 20seconds then I increased the volume then it just went phrump and stopped working, the other speaker just went phrump every time you wire them in ? As I say I’m no expert but thought them as a good replacement.

What did you use for the new insulation?

Fiberglass. White, not pink. Can't remember the brand name. Came in small plastic bags a little bigger than a loaf of bread. One bag per speaker was the right mass.
