Thank you for this video, Very well explained. I even downloaded this same program but never used it, because I recently bought a Wow Flutter Meter Meguro MK-668E, in perfect condition. I do restorations of vintage recorders professionally. Honestly, I don't repair those Tape recorders that don't have a pinch reller. I have some in my collection, but it's just as a reference from the 60s.

So I have a Roberts 771 that when I play back a prerecorded test tape has very little flutter but when I try to record to a blank tape and play that back it has a lot of flutter. How could this be if the playback and record use the same head?

Two thoughts. Could be a record biasing problem. Or it could be deteriorated tape that you are using to record.

the audio for this video gave a super clear visualization on an amplitude spectrogram. Thank you for the wonderful reference.

Invaluable advice. Many people may believe their machine is wrong but it could be the tape itself.

Thank you for this video. It was really interesting. I am here because I am looking for an example of a recording technique used by Geoff Emerick where he had an idea to wrap editing tape around the capstan to make a tape machine flutter. I didn't find what I was looking for, but the video didn't disappoint. I learned a lot.

Very Interesting experience. One suggestion, do not use reference tape. Use exactly the same method that you use to making reference tape for all other recorders, just divide the numbers by 2. The reason to not use 1. it simpler 2. it is more precise - reference tape need to be at list 10 time better then the device under test to have high quality measurement. Professionally made reference tape probably are made on high speed duplicators at list 100 faster speed, when the tape is play with normal speed all the distortion effects are reduce accordingly by speed divisioon. Using just stable signal generator (or even cell phone with sound App have very high stability) , as you did, can achieve the same precision as best reference tape. The reference tape was perfect technician tools in old days when getting professional generator was way beyond what they could buy. The disadvantage: you can't adjust tape speed.

Thanks for the insight. I was going on my gut, but it helps to have someone affirm this. It is MUCH easier to just record a tone and play it back as you suggest. I may go back and redo the entire test. I now have about 60 recorders to test. Pretty good range of sampling.

I have a German Voxette date stamped 20/09/59. It runs on 4 'C' batteries with headphone out only, no built in speaker. Loads of wow and flutter. LOL.

Could be a tire or belt on that unit. Usually if the main drive belt is loose you will get that flutter.

The difference between Wow and Flutter: 28:14 Alaron has extreme Flutter. 29:10 Mayfair has excessive Wow. Nice video and good information. Thank-you for sharing!

Great video Kent! I currently have an AKAI GXC-325D cassette deck in the shop. Just got a part from Overseas to correct a motor issue and it's still in the shop with a latest diagnoses of excessive wow and flutter... New belts have been installed... Capstans and pitch rollers are in super shape... Kind of a head scratcher.

Two other things to consider that I have seen on a few of these. The motor shaft or it’s drive pulley could be bent, or there are other tape path-related issues such as excessive tape tension brake action, or dry or gummed up spindle (take up or supply reel) bushings. Same could be found with the motor (dry or dragging motor bearings or bushings). Thank you for the kind remarks.

@@KOVintageTech Wow, thanks for the fast reply and options! Love this machine and sure hate to see it head for the grave. It was my father's all throughout my growing up.
