Life and Fate was my favourite read of 2016. I usually have to pace myself when I read long books but not with this one. I couldn't wait to return to it each time I put it down. It's harsh and harrowing on occasion but the writing is amazing and not for one moment does it cease to be fascinating. I wish I hadn't bought it now so I could justify buying this beautiful copy! This year I`ve read Life and fate in this edition after finishing Stalingrad, the prequel of Life and fate. Compared with Stalingrad, Life and fate is much superior in many way and I came to understand why its manuscripts had been confisticated. Not confined to just a battlefield, it describes the brutality of the two reigems and the masscre of millions of people brought about by the clash of these two, including famine in Ukraine and Great terror etc. In order to grasp the reality of lives under Stalin and Eastern Front, this book is indispensable.

The thing about P&V translations is that their process is to use ghost translation initially, then get more involved in whittling down the final text of what we end up with. What we’re left with in this assembly line affair is something thoroughly modern, yet also stripped of all the music found in superior translations. Like many things today, P&V as an entity is the creation of public relations, clever marketing tactics, and a puppy mill like operation of workers handling the translation process - and that’s the feeling I get through the text. I don’t appreciate the product, but I do appreciate the grift. For an authoritative (and more enjoyable) translation of Russian classics, truest to the original works, look no further than Constance Garnet.

As the native Russian speaker myself I was pleased by your video. And I may add some more exotic stuff to your list. Not that epic in size or level of passion, perhaps - still, great, as well. First of all, two absurdist/surrealist writers: Kozma Prutkov and Daniil Kharms. Then, the great Soviet poet of the second half of the 20th century - Vladimir Vysotsky. The Soviet, Russian Bob Dylan! He was a prominent Soviet theatre and movie actor, also as a kind of hobby he wrote and performed his poems himself... It may also be interesting for you to know that the almost forgotten today in the USA American sci-fi writer Robert Sheckley is more or less a cult person in the former USSR and nowadays Russia. Like 95% of his works are translated in Russian (sometimes in two or more versions) and it is much easier to find his works in Russian (especially on the Net, especially if you want them for free) than the English originals. Actually, virtually everything translated of him in Russian is available for free on the Net - not the case with the originals, for sure. Going deeper, there was also a "European Edgar Poe", Belgian writer Jean Ray. During the last years his 30-volume collection of works is being published in Russian. 14 volumes have already seen the light of day. It means, quite like with Sheckley, if you are a fan of Jean Ray, you should either learn his native French and Flemish languages or - more realistically - Russian, since, again, it is possible to find almost all of those volumes in Russian for free on the Internet. Definitely not the case with his original books... His English translations are very limited (and costly!), anyway.

"Absolute classics" is the correct expression to describe these books. I remember seeing many of these titles in my grandfather's bookshelf when I was little, and they always looked so... sophisticated and respected. And I don't know what it was, maybe that these books were printed in multiple tomes, or maybe simply the fact it was my *grandfather's* bookshelf, but I always found them intimidating. Only last year I decided to dispel this aura of intimidation that often surrounds the classics (Russian or not) and started slowly making my way through them. From this list of six titles I've only read Master and Margarita (and I loved it) so far, but I hope 2017 brings me enough confidence to take on even Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Would love to participate in the giveaway, of course, and any title besides Master and Margarita would do. :)
