The Opium Tru fragrance has been my signature fragrance since it came out, and now I will go to whatever links to purchase and obtain the original opium. And yes, the new opium is not even comparable

Hi Dimitri, I really love how you give a little piece history with each vintage perfume that you present. You are really knowledgeable and passionate about these perfumes that you collect. You are absolutely correct about the current formulations, they are nothing like the earlier ones, perfumers back then cared about individuality unlike present perfumers who are instructed to create mass appealing perfumes which are not distinct and don't last well.

Opium was my first fragrance I ever bought in 1977. I could not really afford it and went back & forth, came back to the litte perfume shop at least 3 times 🤩. I still love this unique smell so much. One spray lastet till next morning.. so precious 💫 I stopped using it when L‘oreal changed the formula and completely ruined it😢. There will be nothing like it!

Opium is my signature fragrance for 25 years now. Even tho it’s nothing like it used to be. I shop on eBay only. And the homme EDP version was a masterpiece!

I had not heard of the controversy but I can certainly understand it. My Grandmother wore it and I loved it. I have the original scent-have not gotten my nose on the newer version. Thank you for the information.

Opium was the first perfume that I bought during 90's. No one can compare the uniqueness scent of it even a lot of perfume introducing nowadays in the Department Store.

I guess YSL will be canceled if they have launched this now 🙈 I get the insensitivity and lack of understanding of the creation also admire the don't care attitude of those days... Which lead to create some of the best fragrances... Love opium. The Parfum bottle is a work of art.

Oh Dimi I love you so much. We all had our mothers having an Opium moment when they got back from Paris or they took a cruise, back would come the giant bottle of Opium. At the time, i remember people talking about it--it's true--everything about it was scandalous and of course everybody wanted it--Opium was a huge massive thing--even the slogan (pour celles qui s'adonnent à Yves Saint Laurent" was totally outrageous -- difficult to explain what that means but in a nutshell: For women who give themselves up to Yves Saint Laurent. But in french it has a sexual element to it--and the packaging, that cinnabar and then the insides were all purple which is the color of actual opium--actual opium looks like a purple tootsie roll and smells like jasmin. The whole thing was just no end of shock. But it was 1977. We were frothing at the mouth for shocks....that's what turned us all on about it was it was considered the most shocking scent ever made and in the era of L'Air du Temps it definitely stepped up to the plate: This perfume was no disappointment--huffing that bottle was like taking a hit of poppers--we had never smelled anything like that. It was like porn. The first time you see porn when you're 12--Opium was that.

I did not know about the controversy, so I found this very interesting. I came across my Mums (still in the box) de luxe purse bottle. I remember borrowing it for I think a works night out. Kept on meaning to return it. Then, when she passed, I was glad I had it as even the slightest sniff would bring her back to me so clearly. Sadly, I cannot get the bottle to open again so I could refill it, but it’s still very pretty and a keep sake for me.

Oh for God’s sake-the East has done the same thing, cherry-picking from western culture willy-nilly, with no distinction between for instance, French or English, it’s just all western (or at least it was like that for a good while). No one has ever made a song and dance about that nor should they. As for YSL Opium-love the vintage formula, it was my signature scent for many years after my husband bought me my first bottle of the parfum on our honeymoon. I still have vintage Opium in many iterations, carefully kept, and still wear it. New Opium, Opium Black, etc-just no. Of course the same can be said of much of modern parfumerie (not all but much of it). Serge Lutens being one exception which comes to mind (though Nombre Noir is a favorite of mine-bring on those damascones). As for the rest-they’re one reason why I’ve collected vintage scent for decades.

Introduced my roommate to it and she worked her way through my mums old bottle from the 80s-90s in like a month. She replaced it with the new one and, JUST NO! Wow they are barely alike! I’m so sad 😢

The original formula changed when l'Oreal bought the company after Yves' death in 2008. Production was ceased then, and a new Opium launched which smells nothing like the original.

Dimitri; unsure why ? but Opium, Poison, Red Door and Lou Lou trigger a migraine if I smell it on anyone; whether theyr'e half bottle sprayers (kill me now) or spritz .My sense of smell is acute to the point that it feels like Ive swallowed a bit of it……I cannot work out what the note is .. possibly Jasmine ?

@@dimitrisorceryofscent oh gosh , no sorry needed, it is what it is.I always spray my Coco Noir on the top of my hand and bring to my nose to change the dynamic; always brings me to a happy place ❤🧡Never hurts to ask; someone may just have the answer. I went on a quest last night at David Jones and Cartier Carat is the most elegant fresh scent I have smelled since I was young …. not my normal go to as most are too sweet…..but have just re smelled the card and am in heaven. That’s so interesting as I am the same. However, although I avoided Poison, Red Door and Loy Lou, I always lived Opium. My Mum wore it and every time I allow myself just one spray of the pure parfum, I can see and hear her so clearly.
