That Cissy Houston cover is excellent! What a lovely find - records in great condition and the sleeves all perfect! Doesn’t that Decca promo label look miles better than the usual one! I am a bit of a geek with record label design lol. Cheers John.

Was that the Peggy Lipton from the Mod Squad series John? Good to see Strageways right next to Sound Effects. 5:44 When you go digging for singles you really go digging for singles. Love those Demo's/Promos. My only question is. Who put the dates on the labels in pencil? The store owners, the DJ's, the previous owners or the labels themselves? Outstanding update. Congrats on reaching 2k. So well deserved~ Rob/Boston

These promo 45' stacks show up now and then, found a couple in the UK back in the day in Junk Shops where diggers tend to skate over and one in the USA at a yard sale. They tend to look Minty, person who became 'brown bread' no interest in playing them and er indoors wants rid of them.

Hi John. Lots of random obscurities. Was great fun going through them all. A suitcase full of demo 45’s that have sat unplayed for 50 years. It’s the stuff we all dream of! There are a few nice soul demos that will stay in my record box, so I’m a happy man. Cheers!

Beautiful collection of tunes John - immaculate condition from the looks of them and I love the designs on those company sleeves, just really striking colours and layouts. I've got the lone LP recorded by Horace Faith - picked it up on a whim after seeing it about, lingering in the bins getting no love. Quite an interesting album I think, almost seems a concept piece of a sort - not as familiar with his early singles in the UK though and not a great deal of information about him out there. I gather he passed away in Jamaica in obscurity some years back. Enjoy, cheers!

Hi Doug. I’ve never heard the Horace Faith album. I think it came out in the late 70’s, didn’t it? He had a proper hit single in the UK with Black Pearl. I’ve always liked that early 70’s reggae pop sound. It’s funny to think that those records made such a large impact on the U.K. charts. Cheers

As soon as I heard ‘Memory Band’ I was thinking ‘Bonita Applebum’ by A Tribe Called Quest. Q-Tip was a sampling master. All those early nineties hip hop producers just had insane collections, but I dare say they were just picking up armfuls of records for a few pence each in the eighties.

Yeah, Bonita Applebum was my first thought as well when I heard Memory Band. Q Tip still has the most insane record collection. I read an interview with the Chemical Brothers a few years ago when they were talking about working with Q Tip. They said that his collection was ridiculous. Every obscure Prog album they could think of, he had three copies of each. He’s just continually looking for new samples from the most unlikely of sources.

@@6inchpianist yes. If you haven’t watched the J Dilla Crate Diggers documentary on KZitem, it confirms what you’ve just said about Tip. It’s an amazing 20 minute film post him passing away, and very touching. Shows his frankly insane record collection & his friends talking about it.

Nice to come across a collection like that. Nice to have the press releases. That Flying Burrito Brothers single is an odd one. Gene Clark's Tried So Hard was featured on their eponymous post Gram Parsons third album with Rick Roberts on vocals. Whereas Lazy Day was written and sung by Parsons, and it's from Burrito Deluxe, their second album. At some point in 1970, Gene Clark nearly joined the Burritos. There are a few tracks they recorded together. One turned up on his Roadmaster album and a version of She Darked The Sun finally saw light of day on the Lost Studio Sessions release. I wonder if Tried So Hard originally was recorded with Clark on vocals, before being redubbed for inclusion on the album? Hmmm? Peggy Lipton was in Twin Peaks. She played Norma, the owner of the Double R Diner, and served the "damn fine" coffee.

I knew that Lazy Day was from Burrito Deluxe but didn’t recognise Tried So Hard. It was the only country rock record there. Pretty sure it’s never found it’s way on to a turntable. Just an interesting thing. The Peggy Lipton tune is a nice bit of pop soul. One that I’ll definitely keep. Nothing groundbreaking, and a cheap record, but thoroughly enjoyable. Didn’t realise that she was in Twin Peaks. The bio explains that she was in The Mod Squad and was now trying her hand as a singer. I assume that her singing career didn’t last long.

@@6inchpianist Lazy Day was originally recorded for The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, there are two versions on the fancy dancy two disc Legacy edition. The first is rather rockabilly with Chuck Berry-esque guitar, but the second is more country rock. Ironically, had it been on the album, it would easily have been the most rocking tune on there. Just a thought, does the single retain the Spanish introduction, or have they edited it out?
@6inchpianist

Drool... Killer stuff, John. Beat Merchants and In Crowd, very nice. I spied two of my fave tunes I have on single in the stack: Lorraine Child's 'You' and Brian Diamond And The Cutters 'Big Bad Wolf'. This is the sort of collection I love finding. It's rare nowadays, though.

Hi Alan. Yeah, it was really nice suitcase full of records 😀. Because of the mix of styles, there were plenty that I didn’t know. It’s just lovely seeing such interesting records in great condition. Many of them didn’t have much of a value - just straight ahead pop music, I suppose - but still nice to see. The Cissy Houston was the one that jumped out at me. Fantastic version! I asked about the Lorraine Child single but John was unsure what price to put on it. I’ll have another look when I’m next in.
