Well to explain the seemingly contradictory title, it’s apparently not uncommon for the two Valley districts to loan each other trucks for the day. This past Wednesday, East Valley sent one of their diesels, 36782, over to West Valley. I saw it at work and had some time to grab some footage of it. Was pretty surprised to not only see it in West Valley but actually running as a week or so before I had seen 782 being hooked up to a tow truck on the freeway while driving in to work, thankfully they fixed it. However it’s engine definitely isn’t in pristine shape judging by the sort of grinding you hear when the unit idles, although it sounded fine when revved up.
Also I was told that this diesel is the only one that doesn’t have the standard vertical strobe lights on the tailgate. I think that the older dual fuels had this as standard so maybe this units original tailgate was replaced with one off another truck. Kind of cool to see. If I had known or had more time to get footage of the tailgate I would’ve gotten more than the one shot.
Now, for why I didn’t have the opportunity to get more. I had about 6 minutes of video when I noticed the trucks grabbers were badly tilting, the driver noticed it at pretty much the same time I did and we both noticed that the pin that keeps the leveling cylinder for the “cab-side” gripper in place had fallen out. I had first assumed this was probably caused by a broken bolt but on closer inspection of my photos of the failure I believe that the entire casting itself broke apart. To fix this, they will probably need to put a brand new wheel assembly (I think the term is called bogie, not sure though). Thankfully this fix, although pretty labor intensive, probably won’t be career limiting for the vehicle even considering the current circumstances surrounding these 05 diesels. If the city’s shops are anything like WM’s, bogies and other common amrep parts are kept well in stock and it’s probably a safe bet that the unit was out running again the next day, unless someone knows otherwise in which case please comment :)
The last clip in the video actually features the can where it broke, you can see the grabbers fall way out of alignment. Sadly, the clip ends abruptly because of a very poorly timed resident who was curious as to what I was doing interrupting me. Which is ok, it just happened at the wrong time this time.
Thanks to the driver!
