amazing tips that never get old and are practical and relevant no matter what lvl you are; professional or beginner, violists should pay attention as basics like this need to be stressed tenfold compared to the viola. i cant hold a pencil normally anymore as its too addicting to work on DAT GRIP!!!

Great lesson. I had a hard time balancing the bow to try this technique due to my weak and untrained muscles. I bought a dowel the diameter and length of the bow and practiced Colle holding my right wrist rigid with the left wrist. Within a week my muscles started to take over. I practice with the bow and improved my skill, like the Beatles' song, It's getting better all the time. Thanks. Mark T

Colle is a french term which means "glued" in french. The collé allows you to calibrate the 'click' that starts the martelé stroke.

Hello Todd, all the years that I am practicing, I have been told that I need to use my small finger for the upbow. And I agree that my sound is then better, the only minus- I cannot do it for long, my right wrist always starts to hurt in a while...any tips? After watching your video, I might assume that I dont release my wrist properly.

does that apply to the fast notes like 16th and 32th? I started to traing that for like 6 months and my bowing progressed like 200%, but I still have my pinky loose... when I see this lesson again, you say "you only think -thumb and pinky-", so I'll try that! thanks for taking your time to do those lessons to teach such a wonderful instrument!

I'm indebted to your videos. I have a problem that I don't quite know how to fix with this particular bow stroke and finger flexibility in general. My pinky finger on both hands is bent slightly inwards near the top (a minor deformity I was born with). When my finger is straight and I try to bend it, the middle knuckle seems to lock in place. It does bend fairly quickly but it's not smooth,which means my pinky slips off and my movement is jaggard. Is there any way I can get around this? Chloe

I don't know if you also encountered this problem, but when I play colle and martele the bow keeps sliding to the next string, like from A to E, which makes really dreadful noise. How long before I can keep the bow firm enough to keep it on one string?

Prof.V, I havent gotten to this stroke or any of the more advance ones, but while my violin is getting minor repairs, i'm going to try to develop finger flexibility (it seems really important later) my thumb keeps collapsing on me, or it gets hit by the hairs when i try the bow exercises any suggestions?
@fingerhorn4
10 жыл бұрын
I'm confused about the insistence of the thumb being so curved all the time. As the colle stroke unfurls and the fingers straighten, the thumb HAS to straighten too, otherwise the fingers cannot unfold. Surely as long as the thumb is not locked or rigid, it doesn't matter that it is not curved to such an extreme?
@professorV
10 жыл бұрын
fingerhorn4, you are correct, the thumb does straighten when performing this technique. Start from a curved position, then open the fingers. There is no rule how curved it must be to begin, just that you have the ability to create finger motion.

What if your bow hold differs from this one and middle f. And thumb are not touching or not on the opposite sides
@professorV
6 жыл бұрын
NoobSkillz Gaming, there are several schools of thought so consider this just one way to hold the bow. BTW; the thumb never makes actual contact with the other fingers since the bow is in between. Perhaps I wasn’t clear, or just misunderstood your question. Best wishes.

i keep losing my grip after i do these movements with my fingers, am I doing something wrong, or is this just what happens when you start out
@professorV
6 жыл бұрын
MattStormage; it should be expected at first. Remember that once you put the bow on the string you should allow the violin to support the bow, which will left you relax the fingers. Memorise the contact points and correct frequently. Good luck!

Right....very good colle technique lesson....tho in my opinion...I think that the "up and down" Colle strokes should only be developed and practice ONLY on the Frog of the bow due to the fact that it is only at the Frog of the Bow that the player changes from down to up stokes....you are doing it at the middle of the bow....
