@nellievic they are at equal divisions of the vibrating portion of the string, the first harmonic(octave) is halfway, second harmonic is one third and two thirds along vibrating portion of string(octave and fifth), then quarters of the string(two octaves), then fifths(two octaves and a major third).

I would say that a straight pinky is less reliable than a curved one-especially when higher up on the finger board. If a violist can play with a curved fourth finger on the C string, y'all can do it too!

This is brilliant . Thank you. I’ve been trying to work out the harmonics in Wieniawski’s Scherzo Tarantelle. They’re terrible!!! There’s even a artificial Harmonic combined with a chord at the end!

Is it harder or easier to do with 2 people on the same violin?
@BlueLillica

I've noticed that when my friend let me play her violin, it was easier to create a clearer sound, but my violin (even when my professer plays it) is slightly murky and unclear. Is this because of the temperature and humidity level? I feel like that is a bit unlikely because I DO bring my violin EVERYWHERE unless it is kept at home safe.

Your violin may need a tonal adjustment, which is done by a violin repairman. Do you have a violin shop anywhere near where you are? You can also experiment with different types of strings. Good luck.

When I do this I don´t bend my pinky, it puts unnecessary pressure on my left hand and I also don´t bow right next to the bridge put it still sounds good. The bowing isn´t my point but I think you shouldn´t teach to straighten the pinky because it´s harder on the hand. Also vibrato is 10 times easier with a bent pinky

Im playing the Bartok Pe loc and this was very helpful. How do you do vibrato on artificial harmonics to make it sound pretty?
@joelljohnson6238

You’re actually not supposed to do vibrato on harmonics. Their quality should be a spooky, ethereal sound, which tends to get lost when attempting vibrato.

is that an experimental chinrest?...are you bias to using a shoulder rest?
@professorV

That’s a rest with a block of wood mounted to the bottom, but I decided I didn’t like it. Lately, I’ve been using the “Kreddle” which is extremely adjustable. I like it.

@@professorV oh, right on!....Im just in the process of ordering the 'Kreddle'...looks to be a brilliant design. Im hoping it will allow me to drop my left shoulder and render a more relaxed and natural set-up.I've never been inclined to use a shoulder rest.

i have a question! it has nothing to do with harmonics, though. Okay so, my teacher is really old and isnt very good...anyways, i have been holding my violin very wrong! like, my thumb comes up over the fingerboard. So ive been practicing with my thumb completely underneath. basically my thumb is supporting the fingerboard. if that makes any sense O.o anyways, Ive deffinantly seen a difference in how i play and im just wondering if that is considered "incorrect" also?
@_pizzasauce

Niki Moon your thumb should be on the side of the neck not under
@Vanessa-pp6dg

Your thumb shouldn't be completely underneath, just sort of peeking out from under. Does that make sense?

generally you write the tone you want to hear two octaves down, and then have a second smaller (cue) note with a diamond notehead above it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_harmonic
