It’s considered first wave of black metal along with many other albums from that era that make the first wave of black metal list, Kreator Endless Pain, Onslaught Power From Hell, BloodFeast Kill For Pleasure, Infernal Majesty None Shall Defy, Sacrifice Torment in Fire, Destruction Sentence of Death, early Sodom, Bulldozer Day of Wrath, early Bathory, Early Sepultura Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation, Protector Misanthropy, just to name a few of my favorites.

9:05 - None of these things are true. David DeFeis owed the producer some money, and so in 1985 he came up with the idea to make music under fake names and he basically made 3 metal albums in 1 month in 1985, one of them is the Exorcist, along with the guitarist Edward Pursino, the other one is ''Original Sin'' - the album ''Sin will find you out'' was also written by Dave, and actually his sister sang on this album, and Virgin Steele remade some songs with David on vocals (on the album Book of Burning, ( ''The Succubus'', and ''Conjuration of the Watcher'' ) which are great, I recommend checking out the album ''Book of Burning'' from VS. And the third album that David made was called ''Stay Ugly'' the band ''Piledriver''..

Upon second listening, I actually changed my mind. I now lean towards Exorcist. I like the roughness and the speed in this version.

It's more Black Metal, Thrash Metal does not have these kind of vocals mostly, so I'd say it's old school early Black Metal..

The riff is great in either form, but Exorcist is so far and away better. Just IMHO.

From what I've read, they owed their label money and that's why they did the Exorcist, Original Sin and second Piledriver albums. They were all done very quickly and...you can tell haha. I'm surprised you guys went with the Exorcist, the VS version has so many great melodies that aren't on the original. VS also re-did "Queen of the Dead" by Exorcist.

Exorcist is more brutal, Virgin Steele actually influenced Black Metal, some Black Metal bands list Exorcist as their influence!

In my opinion the best track in the House of Atreus albums is ''The Great Sword of Flame'' that song is just amazing, probably even heavier than any Invictus track, but Invictus as a whole is a heavier album.
@lopolik

also the Great Sword of Flame has one of David's highest note scream (A6 note), shorter one, a long A6 extreme high falsetto (whistle note in this case) is in Prometheus (the fallen one) off of Marriage of heaven and Hell part 2.

This battle was kinda weird, same band, two names, (almost) the same song... I liked the Virgin Steele version better, I like the complex music and the changes in the rythm that you guys also talked about.

Chiming in late. Excellent idea to compare the two. This is not the only band that Virgin Steele basically stolen from themselves. The song "The Fire God" from Virgin Steeles House of Atreus I album is the same as the song with the same title by the band Piledriver from their album "Stay Ugly" from 1986. Now normally you'd assume it's basically stolen because the songs are the same, but behind Piledriver is no other than David DeFeis who has also written that song (and probably most of the album too). Additionally the Exorcist song Black Mass has been used on Virgin Steeles 2015 album. Pretty much 1:1. Don't listen to that VS song though, it's really bad. There are only 1 or 2 good songs on VS 2015 album Nocturnes of Hellfire and Damnation. Edit: Michael has already mentioned this at the end of the video, so I was a bit premature.

Speed metal Virgin Steele > Virgin Steele 😎 Glad to see you guys return to the band, one of the unsung heroes of the genre. Would recommend Primordial - To the Nameless Dead if you guys want to dip a bit into black metal stuff, very accessible while still being great.
