The 2013 Virginia basketball team started off their season with deflating home losses to Virginia Commonwealth and Wisconsin, and a devastating loss to Tennessee on the second-to-last day of 2013.
But as the new year began, so did a new spirit of Cavaliers basketball. Coach Tony Bennett's Wahoos kicked off 2014 with a 12-point victory in Tallahassee over Florida State, followed by a 23-point victory over Wake Forest and a 31-point victory in Raleigh versus North Carolina State.
Virginia went on to win 16 of their 18 Atlantic Coast Conference matchups, tying them for the most ever ACC wins in a season.
12 of their 16 wins were by ten or more points, which included two-game sweeps of both FSU and ACC-newcomer Notre Dame. Virginia also swept in-state rival Virginia Tech for the second straight season.
Virginia led the nation in scoring defense throughout most the ACC season, and went on to win the ACC regular season crown for the first time since the Ralph Sampson era in the early 1980s.
Some of the Virginia Cavaliers most notable ACC feats include:
-Two 12-point victories against FSU
-A 15-point victory over rival North Carolina
-A last-second victory at #18 Pittsburgh on guard Malcolm Brogdon's three-pointer
-A victory at Clemson over the Tigers' then-#2 scoring defense
-A 19-point victory over Syracuse, which won UVa the outright ACC regular season title and the #1 seed for the ACC Tournament
Go Wahoos
